The 2026 Tata Punch EV has undergone a real-world range test to determine how far the electric SUV can travel on a full charge under everyday driving conditions. The updated Punch EV is available with larger battery options and receives styling and powertrain changes compared with the previous model.

For the latest test, the 40kWh battery version of the Tata Punch EV was evaluated in both city and highway conditions. The results provide a more realistic idea of the distance owners can expect compared with the company's certified range figure.

Tata Punch EV 40kWh Real-World Range

The 2026 Tata Punch EV 40kWh uses a permanent-magnet synchronous motor producing 129 hp and 154 Nm. It is available with Eco, City and Sport driving modes.

During the real-world test, the vehicle was driven in Eco mode. Regenerative braking was set to L3 during the city test and L1 on the highway.

The Punch EV delivered an efficiency of 7.92 km/kWh in the city, resulting in an estimated real-world range of around 317 km.

On the highway, efficiency reduced to 7.29 km/kWh, translating to approximately 291 km of range.

Taking the combined efficiency of 7.61 km/kWh, the 40kWh Tata Punch EV achieved an estimated overall real-world range of approximately 304 km on a full charge.

City vs Highway Range

The test shows that the difference between city and highway range is noticeable but not particularly large.

Test Condition Efficiency Estimated Range
City 7.92 km/kWh 317 km
Highway 7.29 km/kWh 291 km
Overall 7.61 km/kWh 304 km

The city result benefits from lower average speeds and regenerative braking, while higher speeds on the highway generally require more energy. However, the Punch EV maintained relatively strong efficiency in both conditions.

Battery and Powertrain

The updated Punch EV is offered with 30kWh and 40kWh battery packs. The 40kWh version tested uses a single electric motor mounted at the front.

The larger battery is rated for a claimed range of 468 km, while the real-world test figure of around 304 km demonstrates the difference that actual traffic, driving conditions, climate control and driving patterns can make.

The 40kWh version produces 129 hp and 154 Nm and comes with three drive modes: Eco, City and Sport.

Tata Punch EV Charging Time

The 2026 Punch EV also gets improved DC fast-charging capability. Tata has increased the maximum DC charging capability to around 65kW, compared with 50kW on the earlier model.

During the test, the Punch EV was connected to a 180kW DC fast charger and recorded a peak charging rate of around 67.3kW.

The battery took approximately 27 minutes to charge from 20% to 80%. Charging from 80% to 100% took an additional 31 minutes, as charging speeds reduce significantly at higher battery states of charge.

How the Range Test Was Conducted

The test vehicle was fully charged before the range evaluation, while tyre pressures were maintained according to the manufacturer's recommended levels.

The car was driven on a fixed route covering city roads and a nearby highway. The test also included normal use of the climate-control system and other electrical equipment rather than switching these features off to maximise range.

This approach provides a more realistic indication of what drivers could experience during everyday use.

2026 Tata Punch EV vs Previous Model

The 2026 Punch EV receives a larger battery compared with the previous-generation model. The new version's 40kWh battery is larger than the earlier 35kWh unit, while motor output has also increased.

Specification 2026 Punch EV Previous Punch EV
Battery 40 kWh 35 kWh
Motor Single Front Motor Single Front Motor
Power 129 hp 122 hp
Torque 154 Nm 190 Nm
Claimed Range 468 km 365 km

What Does 304 Km Real-World Range Mean for Buyers?

A real-world range of around 304 km means the 2026 Tata Punch EV 40kWh can comfortably handle most daily urban commuting without requiring frequent charging.

For buyers who primarily drive within the city, the tested figure of around 317 km is particularly relevant. Highway users should plan for a somewhat lower figure of around 291 km under similar testing conditions.

Actual range can vary depending on speed, traffic, outside temperature, air-conditioning use, passenger and luggage load, tyre pressure, driving style and regenerative-braking settings.

Verdict

The 2026 Tata Punch EV's latest real-world range test shows that the 40kWh version can deliver around 304 km of overall range, with approximately 317 km in city conditions and 291 km on the highway.

The larger battery, improved charging capability and updated powertrain make the Punch EV a more capable option for buyers looking for a compact electric SUV. While its certified range is considerably higher, the real-world test figure provides a more practical benchmark for everyday ownership.

For urban users, the tested city range should be sufficient for regular commuting, while highway travellers will need to plan charging stops according to their route and driving conditions.
