Bookings for the Superb and Octavia diesel variants will begin by May; Skoda’s CBU strategy depends on changes in customs duty regulations.

Skoda Auto India is set to bring back diesel engines in 2025, with plans to launch five premium models — including the Superb, Octavia RS, and Kodiaq — through the completely built unit (CBU) route. This marks a strategic pivot for the Czech automaker, as it taps into enthusiast demand and aligns with a global trend toward cleaner diesel technologies.

“We already have in-principle clearance for the Kodiaq, Superb, and Octavia diesel variants. In a recent interaction, the cars are ready for India,” confirmed Petr Janeba, Brand Director, Skoda Auto India. Skoda intends to commence bookings in the latter half of May, with deliveries anticipated shortly thereafter. However, the timeline remains tentative, pending finalisation of logistics and customs duty arrangements.

Skoda is working on a “unique retail model” where bookings will be opened quarterly, and vehicles will be imported based on confirmed demand. “It makes no sense to bring 100 Superbs and leave them standing. We’ll take bookings and bring them in batches — likely several tens of cars, depending on the duty situation,” Janeba explained.

As part of its strategy for the Indian market, Skoda has expanded its premium lineup with the launch of the all-new second-generation Kodiaq — a luxury 4x4 SUV starting at Rs 46.8 lakh (ex-showroom). According to Brand Director Petr Janeba, the new Kodiaq reflects Skoda’s commitment to strengthening its presence in the premium segment. “The Kodiaq has evolved into a legacy model for us, much like the Octavia and Superb,” Janeba noted, emphasizing that the launch showcases the brand’s focus on luxury, advanced technology, and all-round driving versatility.

Test drive units of the Octavia RS and Superb diesel are already available in India, while the Kodiaq diesel is expected to arrive soon.

Skoda’s CBU lineup for 2025 will feature the Kodiaq diesel, Superb diesel, Octavia diesel, Octavia RS, and Kodiaq RS, though overall annual volumes are expected to remain limited. “We're talking about several hundred cars a year, potentially going up to 1,000 depending on how the customs duty story evolves,” Janeba added.

Skoda’s final import volumes and rollout schedule will largely depend on potential changes to India’s import duty framework, which is currently under review. Factors such as the government’s new EV policy, ongoing global tariff negotiations — particularly with the US and EU — and domestic lobbying by automakers could all influence the brand’s CBU strategy.

Janeba acknowledged that the Octavia RS could face ground clearance challenges in India’s driving conditions. “At 129 mm, it’s tough. You can’t enjoy an RS by raising the height. Some cars are just too low,” he said, adding that these cars are ultimately intended for enthusiasts.

While the company remains bullish about long-term localisation, the CBU program provides a platform to test the waters with niche performance and diesel products before committing to broader-scale investments. “We're watching the policy environment closely. Something is bound to change, and we want to be ready,” Janeba concluded.
