Yamaha has expanded its performance motorcycle range in India with the launch of the new YZF-R2, positioned above the popular R15 V4. The new supersport motorcycle is available in three variants, with prices starting at Rs 2,30,500 for the standard R2 and going up to Rs 2,53,000 for the range-topping R2M. All prices are ex-showroom.

The three variants are the R2, R2 Quick Shifter and R2M. The R2 Quick Shifter is priced at Rs 2,39,500, while the flagship R2M gets additional premium equipment and exclusive styling elements.

New Yamaha R2 Gets 204cc Engine

The Yamaha YZF-R2 is powered by an all-new 204cc, liquid-cooled, four-valve, DOHC single-cylinder engine. The motor produces 26.5 PS at 10,000 rpm and 19.1 Nm of peak torque at 8,000 rpm.

The motorcycle features an electronically controlled throttle and Yamaha Riding Control, offering Street, Sport and Rain riding modes. Riders can also configure a Custom mode by adjusting parameters such as throttle response, traction control and quickshifter settings.

The engine incorporates a finger rocker-arm valve system, an 11.5:1 compression ratio and a mirror-finished DiASil cylinder. It also uses semi-dry-sump lubrication and an assist-and-slipper clutch.

Yamaha has additionally revised the airbox and exhaust system to give the R2 a more engaging intake and exhaust sound, complementing its sporty character.

Lightweight Chassis and Supersport Hardware

One of the major highlights of the new Yamaha R2 is its lightweight chassis. The motorcycle uses a newly developed high-tensile steel diamond frame combined with a pivot-mounted aluminium die-cast swingarm.

According to Yamaha, the chassis is 2.8 kg lighter than the R15's, while retaining the rigidity required for a performance-focused motorcycle. The R2 has a claimed wet weight of 149 kg, resulting in a power-to-weight ratio of 5.62 kg/PS.

The motorcycle gets an 810 mm seat height and a 1,340 mm wheelbase, along with a 24.5-degree caster angle, 103 mm trail and 20 mm front-fork offset.

Yamaha R2 Features USD Forks, TFT Display and Radial Brake

The braking setup includes a 282 mm floating front disc paired with a radially mounted four-piston calliper. The motorcycle also comes equipped with USD front forks and LED lighting.

A 5-inch colour TFT instrument cluster is another key feature. The display supports turn-by-turn navigation and connectivity through Yamaha's Y-Connect system.

These features give the R2 a more premium equipment package than conventional entry-level performance motorcycles.

Yamaha R2 Variants and Colours

The standard R2 is offered with black wheels, a mechanical key and conventional suspension settings. It is available in Dark Bluish Gray and Metallic Black.

The R2 Quick Shifter adds an up-and-down quickshifter and comes in two model-specific colour options: Racing Blue and Matte White Pearl.

At the top of the range, the R2M is available exclusively in Metallic Gray. It receives several visual and equipment upgrades, including blue wheels, a raised 3D emblem, a faux-suede seat and a silver swingarm.

The R2M also features a shot-blasted exhaust end cap, engraved fork caps, a smart key, adjustable front and rear preload and five-position adjustable clutch and brake levers.
