Volkswagen Tukan Pickup Unveiled in Brazil, Set to Replace Saveiro

Volkswagen has unveiled its all-new Tukan pickup in Brazil, marking an important addition to the automaker’s growing product portfolio for Latin American markets. The new pickup was revealed at the Barretos Rodeo Festival and is expected to go on sale in Brazil in early 2027.

The Tukan will serve as a replacement for the long-running Volkswagen Saveiro, which has been in production since 1982. Once launched, the new pickup will primarily compete with the Fiat Strada, one of Brazil’s best-selling light commercial vehicles.

Volkswagen Tukan: Design and Exterior

The Volkswagen Tukan follows the brand’s latest design language, combining a rugged pickup stance with modern styling elements. At the front, the pickup features slim LED headlamps and connected, top-mounted LED daytime running lights, along with a wide blacked-out grille.

Its upright front fascia gives the Tukan a more robust appearance, while the side profile features squared wheel arches, protective body cladding, door trim, side steps and sporty alloy wheels.

Volkswagen will offer the Tukan in single-cab and double-cab configurations. The single-cab version is designed primarily for commercial users and features a larger cargo bed along with steel wheels. The double-cab model is aimed at private and mainstream buyers and gets blacked-out pillars, prominent grab rails and a more feature-rich cabin.

At the rear, the pickup gets vertically stacked tail lamps, TUKAN branding on the tailgate and a full-width stepped rear bumper designed to make loading and accessing the cargo area easier.

Volkswagen has confirmed that the Tukan will be larger than the outgoing Saveiro, although the company has not yet released complete dimensional or technical specifications.

Practicality and Target Customers

The two body styles will serve different customer groups. The single-cab Tukan will focus on commercial applications, fleet operations and small businesses, with its larger cargo area designed to maximise carrying capability.

Meanwhile, the double-cab version will target individual buyers looking for a more versatile pickup with additional passenger space and a wider range of comfort and convenience features.

The Tukan is part of Volkswagen’s broader plan to introduce 21 new products in Brazil and other Latin American markets by 2028.

Volkswagen Tukan: Platform and Suspension

Under the skin, the Tukan is based on an architecture derived from Volkswagen’s MQB platform, which also underpins models such as the Polo, Tera, Nivus and T-Cross.

However, Volkswagen has adapted the architecture specifically for pickup duty. One of the key changes is a rigid rear axle with leaf-spring suspension, a setup commonly used in commercial vehicles because of its durability and ability to handle heavier loads.

The suspension arrangement is also similar to that used by the Fiat Strada, giving the Tukan a direct technical approach to its primary competitor.

Expected Powertrain Options

Volkswagen has not yet confirmed the complete engine lineup for the Tukan. However, reports suggest that the pickup could be offered with multiple powertrain options aimed at different customer groups.

Entry-level versions are expected to use a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a manual transmission. This combination could appeal to fleet operators and small businesses looking for a straightforward and cost-effective pickup.

Mid-range variants could receive a 1.0-litre flex-fuel engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Volkswagen could also offer its newer 8-speed automatic transmission with this engine.

At the top of the range, the Tukan could potentially feature a 1.5-litre TSI Evo2 engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This powertrain could eventually find its way into other Volkswagen models sold in Brazil.

Volkswagen Tukan Launch Timeline

The Volkswagen Tukan is expected to launch in Brazil in early 2027. It will be available in single- and double-cab configurations, allowing Volkswagen to target both commercial and private customers.

For now, Volkswagen has positioned the Tukan specifically for Latin American markets, and there are no confirmed plans to introduce the pickup in other regions.

With a modern design, two body configurations, a cargo-focused suspension setup and potentially multiple petrol and hybrid powertrain options, the Tukan is expected to become an important model in Volkswagen’s Latin American product strategy
