Range Rover Sport Electric Prototype First Drive: Familiar Design, New-Age Performance

The upcoming Range Rover Sport Electric has completed an important stage of development ahead of its global debut in September 2026. After an extensive testing programme, the electric SUV has now been driven in prototype form at Goodwood, offering an early look at how Land Rover has translated the Range Rover Sport formula into an EV.

At first glance, the electric version looks remarkably similar to the conventional Range Rover Sport. Land Rover has deliberately retained the familiar design, focusing instead on upgrading the technology, performance and refinement underneath the skin.

The electric Range Rover Sport is expected to reach Indian markets around March 2027, following its global launch.

Familiar Styling With Subtle EV Changes

The Range Rover Sport EV retains the muscular proportions and premium design language of the existing SUV. The main visual differences are limited to details such as a revised grille with narrower air openings and more aerodynamic alloy wheels.

Land Rover's decision to avoid major styling changes is intentional. The company wants the electric model to remain instantly recognisable as a Range Rover Sport while offering the advantages of an electric powertrain.

Underneath the familiar exterior, however, the SUV is significantly different. The EV uses a new 800V electrical architecture, two electric motors and a large battery pack. Land Rover says the technology has undergone more than 60,000 hours of testing to ensure it delivers the required combination of performance, comfort and off-road capability.

550hp and 850Nm Deliver Strong Performance

The Range Rover Sport Electric prototype uses two electric motors, each developing 326hp, giving the SUV a combined output of around 550hp. Maximum torque is rated at 850Nm.

The immediate torque delivery gives the large SUV impressive acceleration. Launch control produces strong forward thrust, although the power delivery has been tuned to feel smooth and controlled rather than aggressive.

During prototype testing, some torque steer could be felt under hard acceleration. The brakes also had a relatively sharp initial response, but Land Rover engineers have indicated that the production version will receive further calibration.

Exceptional Ride Comfort

One of the biggest strengths of the electric Range Rover Sport is its ride quality. The absence of engine noise creates an exceptionally quiet cabin experience, while the electric powertrain and suspension setup help the SUV glide over both smooth roads and rough surfaces.

The prototype demonstrated particularly impressive composure on gravel sections, maintaining the comfortable and isolated character expected from a Range Rover.

Electric Powertrain Enhances Off-Road Ability

Despite its luxury-focused character, the Range Rover Sport Electric remains a serious off-road vehicle.

The electric motors can deliver and control torque almost instantly, allowing the system to distribute power precisely between the axles. This gives the SUV excellent control over difficult surfaces and obstacles.

During testing, the prototype tackled steep steps and other challenging off-road sections. The combination of adjustable suspension, camera-based systems and hill-descent control allowed the SUV to maintain steady progress over demanding terrain.

The electric drivetrain also reduces the need for some traditional mechanical off-road hardware because torque can be controlled electronically with much greater precision.

Lower Centre of Gravity Improves Handling

The large battery pack adds significant weight, with the SUV tipping the scales at close to 2.8 tonnes. Despite this, the Range Rover Sport EV feels surprisingly controlled through corners.

Its centre of gravity is around 73mm lower than that of the combustion-powered version, helping reduce the top-heavy sensation traditionally associated with large luxury SUVs.

There is still noticeable body movement when the steering is turned aggressively, but overall stability and cornering composure are impressive for a vehicle of this size.

Range and Practicality

Land Rover is targeting a real-world driving range of around 531km. The final range in everyday conditions will depend on factors such as driving style, speed, temperature and terrain.

There are some practical compromises. Unlike several other electric SUVs, the Range Rover Sport EV does not feature a front storage compartment, or frunk. The rear motor packaging also means the electric model will not offer a seven-seat configuration.

For most buyers in this segment, however, these limitations are unlikely to outweigh the focus on luxury, comfort and performance.

Range Rover Sport EV India Launch and Price

The electric Range Rover Sport is scheduled to make its global debut in September 2026, with an India arrival expected around March 2027.

Land Rover has not yet announced the official price. However, the electric version is expected to be positioned above the locally assembled combustion-powered Range Rover Sport.

Verdict

The Range Rover Sport Electric does not attempt to completely change the identity of the popular luxury SUV. Instead, Land Rover has focused on preserving its familiar design and character while introducing a sophisticated electric powertrain underneath.

With 550hp, 850Nm, advanced four-wheel-drive control, a claimed 531km real-world range and a significantly lower centre of gravity, the Range Rover Sport EV could become one of the most refined electric luxury SUVs when it reaches production.
