Mercedes-Benz cars has completed its global “140 Years, 140 Places” tour, marking a major milestone in the luxury carmaker's anniversary celebrations. The journey brought the S-Class sedan cars into the spotlight across different countries and driving environments, showcasing the model's comfort, engineering and long-distance touring capabilities.
The tour was organised to celebrate 140 years of automotive innovation associated with the brand. Three Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans reportedly travelled more than 65,000 kilometres across 55 countries and six continents before the journey concluded in Stuttgart, Germany, on 17 October 2026. India was among the countries included in the global expedition.
The initiative also highlighted how luxury vehicles perform across changing climates, road surfaces, traffic conditions and landscapes, while connecting the brand's historic automotive legacy with its current flagship sedan.
The expedition featured three new S-Class sedans named Bertha, Carl and Gottlieb, in honour of automotive pioneers associated with the origins of the automobile.
The vehicles departed from Stuttgart on 29 January 2026, following the global premiere of the updated S-Class. Over approximately nine months, they travelled through 55 countries, crossed 67 national borders and experienced 13 climate zones.
The tour covered more than 65,000 kilometres, turning the anniversary celebration into an extended real-world test of the flagship sedan's powertrain, chassis, ride comfort and technology.
India was an important part of the global journey, with the S-Class travelling through a variety of landscapes, from major cities to demanding mountain roads.
One of the expedition's most notable highlights was the drive to Umling La in Ladakh, situated at approximately 5,800 metres above sea level. The route provided a challenging environment for the luxury sedans because of the high altitude and demanding road conditions.
The Indian leg also included destinations such as Delhi, Agra, Mumbai, Jaipur, Leh, Udaipur and Pune. The vehicles encountered monsoon conditions and flooded roads, demonstrating the different challenges faced during long-distance driving in India.
The journey offered an opportunity to experience the S-Class beyond controlled development environments. However, the expedition should be viewed as a real-world touring exercise rather than a formal certification of reliability or performance.
The S-Class serves as Mercedes-Benz's flagship luxury sedan, combining passenger comfort, advanced technology and long-distance driving capability. The global tour allowed the company to observe how these systems performed across widely varying environments.
Key challenges included:
Changing temperatures: The cars passed through desert, tropical and cooler climates.
Different road surfaces: The expedition included paved highways, uneven roads and challenging mountain routes.
High-altitude driving: The Ladakh section exposed the vehicles to thin air and steep terrain.
Long-distance travel: The sedans covered thousands of kilometres across multiple countries.
Comfort and vehicle systems: The journey provided real-world exposure for the chassis, powertrain and climate-control systems.
Mercedes-Benz said the expedition complemented its regular development testing by placing the cars in real-world conditions across different regions.
The global expedition concluded on 17 October 2026, when the three S-Class sedans returned to the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.
Their arrival was marked by a celebration featuring a convoy of 140 historic and current vehicles, alongside the global debut of the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV. The event brought the anniversary journey back to the city where the brand's automotive story began.
The return also marked the completion of one of the company's most ambitious anniversary activities, bringing together its automotive heritage, current vehicles and international customer communities.
The expedition commemorates 140 years since Carl Benz filed the patent associated with the first automobile in 1886. The anniversary provides an opportunity for Mercedes-Benz to connect its pioneering history with its latest engineering and luxury technologies.
The S-Class was a fitting choice for the tour because it represents the brand's flagship approach to comfort, innovation and premium motoring. By taking the sedans across continents, the company also showcased the model to customers and enthusiasts in diverse markets.
For India, the journey was particularly relevant because it included demanding Himalayan roads as well as major urban destinations. It highlighted the country's varied driving environments and its place in the brand's international activities.
