India’s Electric Vehicle Market Continues Strong Growth

India’s electric vehicle market maintained its strong growth momentum in August 2026, with electric passenger vehicle retail sales rising 51% year-on-year to 30,418 units. The latest figures highlight increasing consumer interest in electric cars and the continued expansion of India’s electric mobility ecosystem.

Although August sales were lower than July’s record 34,454 units, the segment crossed the 30,000-unit mark for the third consecutive month. Electric passenger vehicle sales had reached 33,529 units in June and climbed to their current monthly high of 34,454 units in July.

EV Sales Cross 2 Lakh Units in Eight Months

The strong performance in August has pushed India’s cumulative electric passenger vehicle sales for January-August 2026 to 215,871 units. This is already higher than the full-year 2025 retail figure of 194,739 units.

Cumulative sales during the first eight months of 2026 have grown by around 79% year-on-year, indicating that demand for electric passenger vehicles is expanding rapidly.

Period Electric PV Sales Growth
August 2025 20,095 units
August 2026 30,418 units 51% YoY
July 2026 34,454 units

Tata Motors Leads India’s Electric Car Market

Tata Motors continued to lead the mass-market electric passenger vehicle segment in August 2026. The company recorded 13,070 EV registrations, marking a 62% year-on-year increase.

Mahindra secured the second position with 6,408 units, up 55% YoY, while JSW MG Motor ranked third with 4,602 units.

A major change in the rankings came from VinFast, which moved into fourth position after recording 2,198 units in August. The company overtook Maruti Suzuki, which registered 1,405 electric passenger vehicles during the month.

Manufacturer August 2026 EV Sales YoY Growth
Tata Motors 13,070 62%
Mahindra 6,408 55%
JSW MG Motor 4,602 -18%
VinFast 2,198
Maruti Suzuki 1,405
Hyundai 802 17%
Kia 640 28%

Electric Two-Wheeler Market Also Expands

Electric two-wheelers continued to contribute significantly to India’s overall EV growth. Sales across the top five listed electric two-wheeler companies increased 69% year-on-year to around 1.60 lakh units in August 2026.

Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor were among the strongest performers. Their electric two-wheeler sales increased by 235% and 91%, respectively, compared with August 2025.

Ola Electric, however, recorded a 29% year-on-year decline during the month. On a month-on-month basis, the electric two-wheeler segment declined by around 11% from July.

Why Did EV Sales Decline From July?

Despite the strong annual growth, August EV registrations were lower than July levels. The month-on-month decline was partly linked to festival-related holidays and reduced activity at regional transport offices, which affected vehicle registrations.

Electric passenger vehicle registrations fell around 12% from July’s record level. However, industry observers continue to see strong underlying consumer demand for electric vehicles.

EV Manufacturers Expand Production Capacity

The strong demand is encouraging major manufacturers to increase their production capabilities. Several companies across the electric passenger vehicle and two-wheeler segments are expanding manufacturing capacity and investing in new facilities.

Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, JSW MG Motor, Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor and Ather Energy are among the manufacturers working to strengthen their EV production capacity.

This expansion is expected to give consumers a wider choice of electric cars, SUVs and two-wheelers while supporting the development of India’s domestic EV manufacturing ecosystem.

What August EV Sales Mean for India

The August 2026 sales performance highlights that India’s EV market is moving beyond the early-adoption phase. Electric passenger vehicles have crossed 30,000 monthly retail sales for three consecutive months, while electric two-wheelers continue to register substantial year-on-year growth.

The fact that cumulative electric passenger vehicle sales have already exceeded the entire 2025 volume in just eight months further underlines the rapid expansion of the segment.

With new EV models, expanding production capacity and growing consumer acceptance, the Indian electric vehicle market is expected to remain an important growth area during the upcoming festive season and beyond.

Final Verdict

India’s 51% year-on-year growth in electric passenger vehicle sales in August 2026 reflects strong momentum for electric mobility. While registrations moderated from July’s record level, the broader trend remains positive, with cumulative EV car sales crossing 2 lakh units and electric two-wheelers also posting significant annual growth.

With automakers increasing investments and launching more electric models, 2026 is shaping up to be a significant year for India’s EV industry
