1. Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)

ABS is one of the most important braking technologies to consider in a truck. It helps prevent the wheels from locking during hard braking, allowing the driver to maintain better steering control.

For trucks operating on highways or carrying heavy loads, effective braking performance is particularly important. Buyers should check whether ABS is available as standard equipment and understand how the braking system performs under different load conditions.

2. Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

Electronic Stability Control helps improve vehicle stability, particularly during sudden steering movements or braking on curves.

This feature can be especially useful for heavy commercial vehicles because a loaded truck can become more difficult to control during emergency manoeuvres. The Indian government has mandated electronic stability control for trucks from October 1, 2027, under the updated safety requirements.

3. Advanced Emergency Braking

Advanced Emergency Braking System can automatically apply the brakes when the system detects a potential forward collision and the driver does not respond appropriately.

The technology is designed to either help avoid a collision or reduce its severity. India has mandated Advanced Emergency Braking for trucks from October 1, 2027.

For fleet operators, this technology can be particularly valuable when trucks operate for long hours and encounter unpredictable traffic conditions.

4. Reverse Parking Alert

Large trucks have significant blind areas around the rear of the vehicle. A reverse parking alert can warn the driver about obstacles while reversing.

The Government of India requires applicable goods vehicles manufactured from April 1, 2020, to have a reverse parking alert system meeting the specified requirements.

Buyers should check the positioning and effectiveness of the warning system before purchasing a truck.

5. Blind-Spot Monitoring

Blind-spot monitoring can help identify vehicles, pedestrians or other road users located in areas that are difficult for the truck driver to see directly.

This is particularly useful for multi-axle trucks and large commercial vehicles operating in busy urban areas. India has scheduled mandatory Blind Spot Information Systems for trucks from January 1, 2028.

6. Driver Drowsiness Detection

A driver drowsiness detection and alert system can monitor signs of driver fatigue and provide warnings when the system detects potentially unsafe behaviour.

The feature is among the technologies scheduled to become mandatory for trucks from January 1, 2028 in India.

This can be useful on highways, particularly during long-distance operations. It can provide an additional warning when driver attention decreases or the truck begins drifting from its intended path.

India has mandated Lane Departure Warning Systems for applicable trucks from January 1, 2028.

8. Strong and Safe Truck Cabin

Electronic safety systems are important, but physical protection is equally crucial. Buyers should examine the strength and construction of the truck cabin.

A stronger cabin can provide better protection to occupants during a collision. Goods vehicles in India are required to undergo specified cabin structural-strength testing.

When comparing two trucks, buyers should therefore look beyond exterior styling and evaluate cabin construction and occupant protection.

9. Seat Belts and Driver Protection

Seat belts remain a basic but essential safety feature. Buyers should check the quality, adjustment range and accessibility of seat belts for the driver and co-driver.

The overall driver environment should also provide good visibility, comfortable seating and easy access to important controls.

10. Reverse Camera and Parking Assistance

A reverse camera can provide the driver with a clearer view behind the truck. When combined with reverse sensors or audible alerts, it can make manoeuvring easier in tight spaces.
