Volkswagen Could Enter India’s CNG Market: New Models Under Consideration

India’s CNG passenger vehicle market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, with several manufacturers preparing to expand their CNG portfolios. While brands such as Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai already have a strong presence in this space, Kia and Skoda are also working towards introducing CNG-powered models.

Now, Volkswagen could be the next major manufacturer to explore CNG technology for the Indian market.

Volkswagen Evaluating CNG and Flex-Fuel Technology

Volkswagen Group CEO Thomas Schäfer recently visited India and interacted with members of the Indian automotive media. During his discussions, he indicated that the company is evaluating technologies such as CNG and flex-fuel powertrains for India.

According to Schäfer, Volkswagen Group already offers these technologies in different international markets. The company is currently assessing when market conditions in India would make it suitable to localise these technologies and introduce them commercially.

A CNG-powered Volkswagen could help the brand target buyers looking for better running costs while retaining the practicality of an internal-combustion engine.

India-EU Free Trade Agreement Could Open New Possibilities

The recently concluded India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) could also create new opportunities for Volkswagen and other European manufacturers.

The agreement could make it easier for international automakers to bring certain models to India as Completely Built Units (CBUs) while benefiting from reduced import duties, subject to applicable limits and conditions.

For Volkswagen, this could potentially make some international models more viable for the Indian market. However, the company is still expected to carefully evaluate pricing and localisation before introducing any new technology or model.

Which Volkswagen Model Could Get CNG?

One of the most interesting possibilities is Volkswagen’s upcoming sub-four-metre compact SUV, which has already been confirmed for the Indian market.

The new SUV is expected to be manufactured in India and launched in 2027. It will use Volkswagen Group’s MQB-A0-IN platform, which also underpins several India-specific models.

The upcoming Volkswagen SUV is expected to share its engineering and architecture with the Skoda Kylaq, making it effectively a Volkswagen counterpart to Skoda’s compact SUV.

Could the New Volkswagen SUV Get a CNG Variant?

Volkswagen currently sells the Tera compact SUV in South American markets, and its dimensions and positioning make it one of the closest international Volkswagen models to the upcoming India-specific SUV.

This raises the possibility that the future Volkswagen compact SUV could draw inspiration from the Tera. More importantly, a CNG version could also be considered if Volkswagen decides to introduce CNG technology alongside the model.

The timing could work in its favour. With the Volkswagen SUV scheduled for 2027, there is sufficient time for the company to evaluate CNG technology and market demand.

At the same time, Skoda could potentially expand its 1.0-litre MQB-A0-IN-based models with CNG variants, which could further strengthen Volkswagen Group’s presence in India's alternative-fuel passenger vehicle market.

Volkswagen CNG Cars: What to Expect

For now, Volkswagen has not officially confirmed a specific CNG model or launch timeline for India. However, the company's interest in CNG and flex-fuel technologies indicates that alternative powertrains are being evaluated for the Indian market.

If Volkswagen eventually introduces a CNG-powered compact SUV or another locally produced model, it could face strong competition from established CNG offerings from Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai.

For Indian buyers, Volkswagen's entry could bring more choice in the CNG segment, particularly for customers who want the lower running costs of CNG combined with Volkswagen's design and driving characteristics.
