New-Gen Hyundai Creta Base Variant and Diesel Spied Testing Ahead of 2027 Launch

Hyundai cars is continuing to test the next-generation Creta in India ahead of its expected launch in 2027. The upcoming third-generation SUV has recently been spotted in two interesting test sightings: one appears to show a lower-spec variant equipped with steel wheels, while another reportedly reveals a diesel-powered version undergoing testing on mountain roads.

The latest sightings suggest that Hyundai is evaluating different versions of the new Creta under varied driving conditions. The SUV is expected to receive a major design and technology upgrade, along with a new platform and potentially a strong-hybrid powertrain.

Next-Gen Hyundai Creta Base Variant Spied With Steel Wheels

The latest sighting near Gurugram in the NCR region shows a test vehicle believed to be a lower variant of the upcoming Creta. One of the most noticeable details is its set of 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, wrapped in 205/65 R16 tyres.

This setup is different from the larger alloy wheels seen on some earlier test vehicles. It suggests Hyundai could be evaluating the entry-level or lower trim of the new-generation SUV.

However, the exact variant name and equipment list have not been confirmed. The steel wheels indicate a more basic configuration, but the final production model's standard features will only become clear when Hyundai officially reveals the SUV cars.

Diesel Variant Reportedly Spotted Testing in the Mountains

Another recent sighting has attracted attention because the test vehicle appears to be powered by a diesel engine. The camouflaged SUV was seen negotiating narrow village roads, broken surfaces and steep inclines in a mountainous region.

The engine sound in the circulated video has been described as resembling a diesel unit. This has led to speculation that Hyundai is testing the next-generation Creta with its familiar 1.5-litre diesel engine.

The diesel option is expected to remain an important part of the Creta range, particularly for buyers who regularly travel long distances or prefer the strong low-speed torque offered by diesel engines. Nevertheless, Hyundai has not officially confirmed the engine specifications or transmission combinations for the new model.

New Hyundai Creta Could Get a Bigger and Boxier Design

The third-generation Creta is expected to receive a substantial exterior redesign. Spy images indicate a more upright and boxy appearance compared with the current model.

The front section is likely to feature a redesigned grille, updated LED lighting elements and a more prominent bumper. The SUV is also expected to receive a new lighting signature, revised body panels and redesigned alloy wheels.

At the rear, changes to the tailgate, bumper and LED tail lamps are expected. Earlier test vehicles have indicated a more angular design, potentially giving the new Creta a stronger road presence.

The upcoming model is also expected to grow in size. Its move to Hyundai Motor Group's newer K3 platform, which also underpins the second-generation Kia Seltos, could allow for a longer wheelbase and improved cabin packaging.

Exact dimensions have not been officially revealed yet.

New Platform Could Improve Cabin Space

One of the biggest changes expected in the next-generation Creta is its platform. The SUV is widely expected to move from the existing architecture to the newer K3 platform.

This platform change could bring improvements in structural engineering, cabin packaging and overall vehicle proportions. The new Creta is expected to be longer and wider than the current model, potentially offering more room for passengers.

The platform is also expected to support additional powertrain options, including a possible strong-hybrid system. However, the final technical details will be announced by Hyundai closer to the launch.

Cabin Expected to Receive Pleos Connect Technology

The interior of the new Creta is expected to receive a major makeover. Hyundai could introduce a redesigned dashboard, a larger touchscreen infotainment system and an updated digital instrument cluster.

One of the expected highlights is Hyundai's Pleos Connect infotainment interface. The system is part of the company's broader connected-car technology strategy and could bring an updated digital experience to the SUV.

Other expected features include:

  • Larger digital displays

  • Redesigned dashboard and centre console

  • Powered front seats

  • Ventilated front seats

  • Panoramic sunroof

  • Wireless phone charging

  • Updated connected-car functions

  • Enhanced driver assistance technology

  • Level 2 ADAS features

These features are based on reports and test-vehicle observations. The availability of individual equipment items may differ across variants, and Hyundai has not released the official feature list.

Expected Engine and Transmission Options

Expected transmission options

1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol

6-speed manual / IVT

1.5-litre turbo-petrol

7-speed DCT

1.5-litre diesel

6-speed manual / 6-speed automatic

To be confirmed

The biggest potential addition is a strong-hybrid powertrain. Reports suggest that Hyundai could introduce a hybrid version using a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and battery system.

If introduced, the hybrid version could help Hyundai compete with models such as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which already offer strong-hybrid technology.

However, Hyundai has not confirmed whether the hybrid version will be available from the beginning of sales or introduced later.

Expected Launch Timeline in India

The next-generation Hyundai Creta is expected to launch in India in 2027. Recent reports point towards a first-half launch timeline, although an exact date has not been announced.

The Creta is one of Hyundai India's most important SUVs, and its next-generation update will be significant as competition in the midsize SUV segment continues to grow.

The new model will face competition from the Kia Seltos, Tata Sierra, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and other midsize SUVs.

What to Expect From the New Hyundai Creta

The latest spy sightings indicate that Hyundai is testing multiple configurations of the upcoming Creta, including what appears to be a lower-spec version and a possible diesel variant.

A larger body, new platform, updated cabin technology and a potential strong-hybrid option could make the next-generation SUV a substantial upgrade over the current model.

For now, the steel wheels seen on the lower-spec test vehicle and the reported diesel-powered mountain test mule are useful clues, but they do not confirm the final variant lineup. More details are expected to emerge as testing continues ahead of the 2027 launch.
