India's sedan cars market delivered a mixed performance in September 2026, with the Maruti Suzuki Dzire continuing to lead by a wide margin while the Hyundai Aura and Honda Amaze recorded healthy year-on-year growth. The newly listed Tata Aeris also made an entry into the monthly rankings, while several established midsize sedans continued to face pressure.
September sales highlight the divide between affordable compact sedans and more expensive midsize models. Buyers continue to value fuel efficiency, manageable ownership costs and everyday practicality, while competition from SUV cars remains a challenge for traditional three-box cars.
For the third calendar quarter (Q3 CY 2026), covering July to September, the Dzire remained the strongest performer among the models listed. The Aura and Amaze also recorded substantial combined quarterly volumes, whereas the Virtus, Slavia, Verna and Honda City operated at considerably lower levels.

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire recorded 17,754 units in September 2026, retaining the top position among the listed sedans. However, sales declined 11.4% compared with September 2025.
Despite the annual decline, the Dzire maintained a substantial lead over its closest competitors. Its popularity among private buyers and fleet operators, along with its compact dimensions and economical ownership proposition, continues to support high volumes.
The Dzire also led the Q3 CY 2026 tally with 59,963 units across July, August and September. This places it well ahead of every other model in the comparison and underlines the continued importance of compact sedans in India's passenger-car market.
The Hyundai Aura finished September in second place with 7,530 units, up 39.8% year on year. Its quarterly total reached 20,032 units, supported by steady sales in July and August as well.
The Aura's performance demonstrates continued demand for compact sedans that offer practical cabin space and relatively accessible purchase and running costs. It remains the closest challenger to the Dzire in this comparison, although the gap between the two models remains substantial.
The Honda Amaze secured third position with 3,286 units in September, registering 25.9% annual growth. Its Q3 CY sales totalled 10,234 units. The Amaze's positive performance adds to the strength of the compact-sedan category, even as overall customer preference increasingly shifts towards SUVs.
The Tata Aeris recorded 2,406 units in September, placing fourth in the requested list. The available source data does not provide comparable July and August figures, so a complete Q3 total cannot be calculated reliably.
Its reported September volume places it ahead of the Volkswagen Virtus, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Slavia and Honda City for the month. Future monthly results will be important in determining whether it can maintain this position and become a consistent contributor to sedan sales.
The Volkswagen Virtus registered 1,172 units in September, a 28.9% year-on-year decline. Its Q3 total stood at 3,893 units, making it the highest-volume model among the four midsize sedans in this comparison.
The Hyundai Verna recorded 762 units, improving 5.1% year on year. Its Q3 tally reached 2,028 units, indicating a more positive September result after weaker sales in August.
The Skoda Slavia recorded 709 units, down 47.1% from the same month last year. Its quarterly total of 2,599 units remained above the Verna's calculated Q3 figure, although its September result was lower.
The Honda City sold 574 units in September, registering 15.7% annual growth. Its Q3 total stood at 1,659 units. While the City posted positive year-on-year growth in September, its overall volumes remained modest compared with the leading compact sedans.
The results show that the sedan market remains heavily concentrated around a few compact models. The Dzire, Aura and Amaze together accounted for 28,570 units in September, making them the primary volume drivers among the models listed.
The midsize-sedan category presents a more varied picture. The Verna and City recorded annual growth in September, while the Virtus and Slavia experienced declines. These results suggest that performance differs considerably by model, even within the same broad segment.
SUVs remain a strong alternative for buyers who prioritise higher ground clearance and a more commanding driving position. Sedans continue to offer advantages such as conventional boot layouts and, depending on the model, attractive efficiency and value. Their future performance will depend on pricing, product updates, equipment and how effectively manufacturers respond to changing buyer preferences.
Conclusion
September 2026 reinforced the Maruti Suzuki Dzire's leadership in India's sedan market, while the Hyundai Aura and Honda Amaze delivered strong annual growth. The Tata Aeris also posted a notable September volume, though a complete quarterly comparison requires additional monthly data.
For Q3 CY 2026, the Dzire led with 59,963 units, followed by the Aura at 20,032 units and the Amaze at 10,234 units. Among midsize sedans, the Virtus led the listed group, while the Slavia, Verna and City recorded smaller quarterly totals.
The next few months will show whether the strong performance of compact sedans can continue and whether midsize models can regain momentum in a market increasingly drawn towards SUVs.
