Volvo car has unveiled new long-range plug-in hybrid versions of its XC60 and XC90 SUVs, significantly increasing their electric-only driving capability. The updated models are being introduced for the European and American markets, with production scheduled to begin later this autumn.

The biggest change comes in the powertrain. Volvo has equipped the PHEV models with a larger battery and a more powerful electric motor, allowing the SUVs to cover much longer distances on electric power before the petrol engine needs to intervene.

Volvo XC60 Gets Major Design Updates

Along with the new long-range PHEV powertrain, the XC60 receives a comprehensive exterior and interior update. The SUV gets a redesigned front section with an updated grille, new bumper, revised bonnet and new wheels.

Volvo has also updated the signature Thor's Hammer Matrix LED headlights, while changes to the rear design give the SUV a wider and more modern appearance. Wheel options range from 18 to 22 inches.

Inside, the XC60 features a redesigned dashboard and door panels, along with updated materials and a new 11.2-inch infotainment screen. The system incorporates Volvo's latest user interface and Google Gemini, allowing drivers to interact with the vehicle using natural-language commands.

XC90 PHEV Offers Up to 160 km Electric Range

The larger Volvo XC90 also receives the new long-range plug-in hybrid system. Volvo claims an electric-only range of up to 160 km on the WLTP cycle, more than two and a half times the electric range of the previous PHEV setup.

The XC90 continues as Volvo's three-row premium SUV, focusing on space, comfort and technology. It also gets the updated infotainment system with Google Gemini and can be equipped with features such as the Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system.

Bigger Battery Brings Longer Electric Driving

The new PHEV system is designed to make electric driving practical for a larger portion of everyday journeys. According to Volvo, the increased range comes from a larger floor-integrated battery combined with a more powerful electric motor, while the petrol engine remains available for longer trips.

The updated XC60 PHEV has also been reported with a 41.2kWh battery, while its all-wheel-drive powertrain can produce up to 461hp and 759Nm in the higher-output configuration. The XC90 PHEV is reported to produce up to 461hp and 751Nm.

India Launch Details

For Indian buyers, there is currently no confirmed launch announcement for these long-range PHEV versions. Volvo has confirmed the new variants for European and American markets, with order books opening in selected markets from September 15, 2026, and production planned for later this autumn
