India’s passenger vehicle market recorded a landmark performance in October 2026, with domestic wholesale sales estimated to have crossed the five-lakh-unit mark for the first time in a single month. Strong festive demand, new product launches and improved buyer sentiment helped major carmakers deliver impressive results.

Mahindra & Mahindra cars, Kia India and Hyundai Motor India reported record or best-ever monthly domestic sales. Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki also recorded strong volumes, highlighting the broad-based momentum across the Indian automotive industry.

The figures below primarily refer to wholesale dispatches from manufacturers to dealerships, rather than retail registrations. This distinction is important when comparing monthly sales reports.

October 2026 Car Sales: Key Highlights

India’s domestic passenger vehicle wholesale sales are estimated to have reached approximately 5.25 lakh to 5.30 lakh units in October 2026. This represents an estimated year-on-year increase of around 12–13% compared with approximately 4.68 lakh units in October 2025.

The month also surpassed the previous monthly industry record, reflecting the impact of the festive buying season and improving demand across different vehicle categories.

Mahindra Records Highest-Ever Monthly Domestic SUV Sales

Mahindra & Mahindra reported its highest-ever monthly domestic SUV sales in October 2026, delivering 73,338 utility vehicles in the Indian market. The company registered a 2% year-on-year increase compared with 71,624 units sold in October 2025.

Including exports, Mahindra’s utility vehicle sales reached 74,904 units during the month. Its overall automotive sales, including commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and exports, stood at 1,31,109 units, representing 9% growth compared with the previous year.

The company attributed its performance to strong festive-season demand and its refreshed product portfolio. Its SUV range continues to attract buyers across multiple price segments, with models such as the Scorpio-N, Scorpio Classic, Thar, XUV 3XO and XUV700 contributing to the brand’s presence in the market.

The recently introduced XUV 3XO ZNG, Mahindra’s first factory-fitted CNG passenger vehicle, also received an encouraging customer response, according to the company.

Mahindra’s commercial vehicle business added further support to its overall October performance. Domestic commercial vehicle sales reached 33,037 units, registering 4% year-on-year growth. Its domestic three-wheeler sales increased by 38% to 17,632 units.

Exports also performed strongly, rising 77% to 7,102 units. This helped Mahindra achieve its highest-ever monthly overall automotive sales.

Hyundai Reports Record Domestic Sales of 62,799 Units

Hyundai Motor India achieved its highest-ever domestic monthly sales in October 2026, selling 62,799 vehicles. The company registered 16.7% year-on-year growth compared with 53,792 units in October 2025.

Hyundai also recorded its highest-ever total monthly sales, including domestic sales and exports, at 82,299 units. Exports accounted for 19,500 units, increasing 21.1% compared with the same month last year.

One of the biggest contributors to Hyundai’s domestic performance was the Venue. The compact SUV recorded its highest-ever monthly domestic sales of 13,017 units in October 2026.

Other vehicles in Hyundai’s Indian portfolio, including the Creta, Exter, i20 and Grand i10 Nios, continued to serve different customer segments. The company's SUV-focused strategy and refreshed product range have helped it maintain a strong position in the competitive Indian passenger vehicle market.

Hyundai also expects its newly launched Bayon to support future growth. The company plans to use the model to strengthen its presence in India and export markets, although its contribution to future sales will depend on market response and availability.

The October performance is significant because Hyundai achieved growth in both domestic and export markets, allowing it to set a new overall monthly sales record.

Kia India Achieves Its Highest-Ever Monthly Sales

Kia cars India recorded its highest-ever monthly domestic wholesale sales since entering the Indian market, with 33,462 units sold in October 2026. This represents a 13.22% increase compared with 29,556 units in October 2025.

The company also surpassed its previous monthly record of 32,017 units, achieved in September 2026. This means Kia registered a new monthly sales record for the second consecutive month.

The Seltos and Sonet remained the primary contributors to Kia’s October volumes. The Seltos alone recorded more than 13,000 units during the month, maintaining its position as one of the company's key volume drivers.

The Carens and Carens Clavis also contributed to the brand’s performance. Their CNG variants together accounted for close to 10% of Kia’s October sales, indicating growing customer interest in alternative fuel options.

Kia also reported its highest-ever monthly electric vehicle sales in October, with EV volumes increasing 31% month on month. The company's electric vehicle portfolio, including the Syros EV and Carens Clavis EV, contributed to this performance.

For the January–October 2026 period, Kia's cumulative domestic wholesales increased 21.31% to 2,86,470 units. The company had already exceeded its full-year 2025 sales volume of 2,80,286 units before the end of October.

Tata Motors Also Records Strong October Performance

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reported domestic sales of 73,894 units in October 2026, registering 20.87% year-on-year growth compared with 61,134 units in October 2025.

The company benefited from demand across its SUV, hatchback, CNG and electric vehicle portfolios. Models such as the Nexon, Punch, Tiago, Altroz, Curvv, Harrier and Safari continue to play important roles in Tata's passenger vehicle business.

Tata's electric vehicle business also remained an important part of its overall strategy. The company reported total EV sales of 16,244 units in October 2026, including domestic and international markets, compared with 9,286 units in October 2025.

The increase in EV volumes highlights the growing importance of electric mobility in India's passenger vehicle market. However, the company's total EV figure should not be directly compared with domestic-only passenger vehicle sales because it includes international sales.

What Helped Automakers Achieve Record Sales in October?

Several factors contributed to the strong performance of the Indian passenger vehicle market in October 2026.

1. Festive Season Demand

The festive period around Navratri and Dussehra encouraged customers to bring forward vehicle purchases. Automakers and dealerships also offered promotional benefits, exchange bonuses and financing schemes to attract buyers.

The festive season traditionally plays an important role in India's automobile market, and October's performance reflected this seasonal boost.

2. GST and Policy Support

Changes in the tax environment, along with supportive financial conditions, helped improve vehicle affordability for several buyers. Industry commentary also pointed to the impact of GST-related measures, interest rates and income-tax benefits on consumer sentiment.

These factors, combined with festive promotions, supported demand across passenger vehicle categories.

3. Strong SUV Demand

SUVs and utility vehicles continued to be major contributors to sales growth. Mahindra's record domestic SUV sales and the strong performance of Hyundai's Venue and Kia's Seltos demonstrate the popularity of this segment.

Automakers are also expanding their SUV portfolios with petrol, diesel, CNG, hybrid and electric powertrain options to meet different customer requirements.

4. Growing Interest in CNG and Electric Vehicles

CNG and electric vehicles are becoming increasingly important in the Indian market. Customers are considering these options to manage running costs and explore alternatives to conventional petrol and diesel vehicles.

Mahindra's XUV 3XO ZNG, Kia's CNG variants and the growing EV portfolios of Tata and Kia reflect this changing market direction.

Outlook for the Indian Automobile Market

October 2026 has provided a strong indication of the demand potential in India's passenger vehicle market. Record monthly dispatches by major manufacturers suggest that customer interest remained healthy during the festive period.

However, the industry will need to monitor whether this momentum continues in the coming months. A portion of October's demand may have been influenced by festive purchases, while dealership inventory and vehicle waiting periods could also affect future dispatch numbers.

Mahindra will look to maintain its SUV momentum, Hyundai will aim to build on its record domestic performance, and Kia will seek to sustain its consecutive monthly sales records. Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki will also remain important competitors as manufacturers prepare for new launches and updates.

Overall, October 2026 was a landmark month for the Indian automobile industry. With estimated domestic passenger vehicle wholesale sales crossing five lakh units, the month demonstrated strong demand for SUVs, compact cars, CNG models and electric vehicles.

For buyers, the expanding choice of powertrains and body styles is creating more options than ever. For manufacturers, the challenge will be to maintain this momentum while managing production, supply and dealership availability.
