India's passenger vehicle market recorded a strong performance in October 2026, with festive-season demand supporting higher vehicle dispatches across major manufacturers. One of the biggest highlights was the close competition between Tata Motors and Mahindra, as Tata moved ahead of its rival to secure second position in domestic passenger vehicle wholesales.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reported domestic sales of 73,894 units in October 2026, compared with 73,338 units recorded by Mahindra. The difference between the two manufacturers was just 556 vehicles, making the competition particularly close.

While Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the Indian passenger vehicle market, Tata Motors and Mahindra remained closely positioned in the race for the second spot. Tata's stronger year-on-year growth and rising electric vehicle volumes were among the important highlights of the month.

Tata Motors Beats Mahindra in October 2026 Sales

Tata Motors recorded domestic passenger vehicle sales of 73,894 units in October 2026, registering approximately 21% year-on-year growth compared with 61,134 units in October 2025.

The company also improved its performance compared with September 2026, when domestic passenger vehicle sales stood at 56,972 units. This represents month-on-month growth of approximately 29.7%.

Mahindra, meanwhile, recorded domestic utility vehicle sales of 73,338 units during October 2026. Although this was slightly lower than Tata's passenger vehicle figure, it represented the company's highest-ever monthly domestic SUV sales performance.

Mahindra's October volumes increased by approximately 2% compared with 71,624 units in October 2025. The company also recorded strong growth in its overall automotive business, supported by utility vehicles, commercial vehicles and three-wheelers.

The difference between Tata and Mahindra's domestic passenger vehicle figures was only 556 units. This highlights how competitive the Indian SUV and passenger vehicle market has become.

India's Passenger Vehicle Market Crosses 5.28 Lakh Units

October was a significant month for the Indian automobile industry. Domestic passenger vehicle wholesales increased to 5,28,384 units, compared with approximately 4.70 lakh units in October 2025, registering year-on-year growth of 12.4%.

Festive-season purchases, improved vehicle affordability and demand for SUV cars contributed to the industry's performance. Several manufacturers recorded strong monthly dispatches, while some companies achieved new sales records.

Maruti Suzuki cars remained the country's largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, recording domestic wholesales of 2,12,384 units during October 2026.

Tata Motors secured the second position with 73,894 units, followed closely by Mahindra at 73,338 units. Hyundai Motor India occupied the next position with domestic sales of 62,799 units.

Kia cars India also delivered a strong performance, recording 33,462 units during the month.

The October results indicate that the market continued to favour SUVs and vehicles offering multiple powertrain options. Manufacturers with a broad portfolio across petrol, diesel, CNG and electric vehicles benefited from demand across different customer segments.

Tata Motors' Electric Vehicle Sales Add to October Momentum

Electric vehicles were another important part of Tata Motors' October performance.

The company recorded domestic electric passenger vehicle sales of 14,552 units during the month. Its combined domestic and international EV sales reached 16,244 units, representing approximately 75% year-on-year growth compared with 9,286 units in October 2025.

The electric vehicle portfolio remains an important part of Tata Motors' passenger vehicle strategy. Models such as the Nexon EV, Punch EV, Tiago EV and Curvv EV give customers options across different vehicle categories.

Tata's EV performance also highlights the growing importance of electric mobility in India's passenger vehicle market. Increasing model availability, charging infrastructure development and changing customer preferences are supporting interest in electric cars.

The company's EV growth is particularly significant because it has increased faster than its overall passenger vehicle business. This indicates that electric models are becoming a more important contributor to its monthly sales volumes.

However, the reported combined EV figure includes domestic and international sales. It should not be confused with the domestic EV sales number alone.

Mahindra Records Its Highest-Ever Monthly SUV Sales

Although Mahindra finished slightly behind Tata in the domestic passenger vehicle comparison, October 2026 was still a landmark month for the company.

Mahindra cars recorded domestic utility vehicle sales of 73,338 units, representing approximately 2% year-on-year growth. The company described this as its highest-ever monthly domestic SUV sales performance.

Its SUV portfolio includes popular models such as the Scorpio-N, Scorpio Classic, Thar, Thar Roxx, XUV700, XUV 3XO and Bolero range. These vehicles serve different customer requirements, ranging from urban family SUVs to lifestyle and off-road-oriented models.

Mahindra's electric SUV portfolio is another important area of development. The BE 6 and XEV 9e have expanded the company's presence in the electric passenger vehicle segment.

The company also highlighted the customer response to its XUV 3XO ZNG, its CNG-powered offering.

Apart from passenger vehicles, Mahindra recorded total automotive sales of 1,31,109 units during October 2026, including exports. This represented 9% year-on-year growth.

Domestic commercial vehicle sales stood at 33,037 units, while exports reached 7,102 units, an increase of 77% compared with the previous year.

These figures show that Mahindra's overall automotive performance remained strong even though its passenger vehicle volume was slightly lower than Tata's.

Why Did Tata Motors Move Ahead of Mahindra?

The difference between the two manufacturers was relatively small, but their year-on-year growth rates tell a more interesting story.

Tata Motors' domestic passenger vehicle sales increased by approximately 21%, while Mahindra's domestic utility vehicle volumes grew by around 2%.

Tata's performance was supported by demand across its SUV, hatchback and electric vehicle portfolios. Its electric vehicle business also recorded substantial growth during the month.

Mahindra, on the other hand, continued to report high demand for its SUV range. Its October result was particularly notable because the company achieved its highest-ever monthly domestic SUV sales despite a relatively modest year-on-year increase.

The comparison also reflects the different product strategies of the two manufacturers. Tata Motors has a broader presence across hatchbacks, SUVs and electric passenger cars, while Mahindra has a particularly strong focus on SUVs and utility vehicles.

It is important to remember that one month's sales ranking does not establish a long-term market position. Future monthly results will determine whether Tata can maintain its narrow lead over Mahindra.

What Does October's Performance Mean for the Indian Car Market?

The October 2026 sales performance highlights three important developments.

First, India's passenger vehicle market continues to benefit from strong demand. Domestic wholesales crossed 5.28 lakh units, demonstrating the industry's scale and momentum.

Second, competition between Tata Motors and Mahindra is becoming increasingly close. A difference of just 556 units shows how small changes in monthly dispatches can influence manufacturer rankings.

Third, electric vehicles are becoming more important in the sales strategies of major manufacturers. Tata's 75% growth in combined EV sales is a notable example of the changing powertrain mix.

The coming months will be important for manufacturers as they look to maintain festive-season momentum, manage production and meet customer demand.

Final Verdict: Tata Motors Finishes Ahead of Mahindra in October 2026

Tata Motors secured second position in India's domestic passenger vehicle wholesales for October 2026, recording 73,894 units compared with Mahindra's 73,338 units.

The difference was just 556 units, but Tata's approximately 21% year-on-year growth gave it an advantage over Mahindra's 2% increase.

Mahindra also had a strong month, achieving its highest-ever domestic monthly SUV sales. Meanwhile, Tata's electric vehicle business continued to grow rapidly, adding another important dimension to its performance.

Maruti Suzuki remained comfortably ahead of both manufacturers, while Hyundai and Kia also reported healthy October volumes.
