Hero MotoCorp is preparing to expand its electric two-wheeler portfolio beyond scooters, with its first electric motorcycles expected to arrive from 2027. The company had showcased the UBEX and VXZ electric motorcycle concepts at EICMA last year, and both models are now moving closer to production.
The move comes as electric motorcycles remain a relatively underdeveloped segment in India compared with electric scooters. While several manufacturers are competing aggressively in the scooter space, the motorcycle category has fewer established products. Hero MotoCorp sees an opportunity to establish an early presence as demand for electric two-wheelers continues to grow.
Hero MotoCorp has officially confirmed that its upcoming electric motorcycles will begin arriving from next year. Kausalya Nandakumar, Chief Business Officer of Hero MotoCorp’s Emerging Mobility Business Unit, revealed that the company is targeting the introduction of new electric products from 2027.
The UBEX and VXZ are among the motorcycles being considered for launch, with either one or both models potentially entering the market during 2027. The company has already filed patents for the two motorcycles, further indicating progress towards production.
Unlike Hero’s existing Vida electric scooter platform, the new motorcycles will use dedicated motorcycle-specific architectures. According to the company, these platforms have been developed around the requirements of motorcycle riders, with particular attention to performance, rideability, range and gradeability. While Hero may use some technology and experience gained from the Vida range, the new platforms are being engineered specifically for motorcycles.
Hero MotoCorp CEO Harshavardhan Chitale has also confirmed that the company’s electric motorcycle programme is progressing steadily, with additional details expected to be revealed closer to launch.
The Hero UBEX is expected to take the form of a sporty electric streetfighter. Patent images show an aggressive design featuring a mono-projector headlamp, LED DRLs positioned above it and a sharply sculpted tank-like body section.
The motorcycle gets an exposed frame, giving it a lightweight yet muscular appearance. Hardware visible in the patent images includes telescopic front forks, alloy wheels, a single-piece seat and petal-type disc brakes at both ends.
Despite its sporty styling, the UBEX appears to feature a relatively comfortable riding position. The motorcycle could also receive a TFT instrument cluster with connected features such as turn-by-turn navigation.
A large battery pack is expected to be positioned within the chassis. If the production version retains a substantial battery capacity, the UBEX could offer a longer riding range than many current mainstream electric scooters.
The VXZ is another electric motorcycle being developed by Hero MotoCorp. The model is believed to be associated with Hero’s collaboration with US-based Zero Motorcycles, with the VXZ name reportedly representing a connection between VIDA and Zero.
However, patent images indicate that the motorcycle uses a completely new platform rather than an existing Zero Motorcycles architecture. This could allow Hero to tailor the bike specifically for Indian road conditions, customer requirements and competitive pricing.
The VXZ features a sharp LED headlamp, aggressive front styling, USD front forks and disc brakes at both ends. It also gets a belt-drive system, semi-faired bodywork, split seats, a rectangular digital display and rear monoshock suspension.
A large fixed battery is mounted centrally, helping maintain a balanced layout. The VXZ could eventually be positioned as a performance-focused electric streetfighter with a blend of modern motorcycle and sportbike-inspired styling.
Hero MotoCorp is also working on increasing production capacity for its existing Vida electric scooter range. The brand currently holds a market share of more than 11% in the electric two-wheeler segment and has seen demand improve following the introduction of the VX2 range and Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) programme.
Vida was the fourth-best-selling product under the Hero MotoCorp umbrella, highlighting the growing contribution of electric models to the company’s portfolio.
Hero plans to raise Vida production capacity to around 45,000 units per month during FY27. This represents a significant increase from the approximately 15,000 units per month capacity available at the end of FY26.
With dedicated electric motorcycle platforms, rising Vida demand and planned capacity expansion, Hero MotoCorp appears to be preparing for a much broader role in India’s rapidly developing electric two-wheeler market
