2027 Kawasaki KLE500 SE SmartRide Revealed: 451cc Engine, Self-Engaging Clutch and Tubeless Tyres

Kawasaki bikes has expanded its adventure motorcycle lineup with the reveal of the 2027 KLE500 SE SmartRide. The new variant brings a mechanical self-engaging clutch system and tubeless tyres to the rally-inspired middleweight adventure bike, making it more convenient for everyday riding and long-distance touring.

Revealed internationally in October 2026, the KLE500 SE SmartRide retains the existing motorcycle's 451cc parallel-twin engine, adventure-focused chassis and long-travel suspension. The main changes focus on reducing clutch effort in stop-and-go traffic and making tyre maintenance more convenient during touring.

The new model joins the standard KLE500 and KLE500 SE in the 2027 lineup. Kawasaki has announced the international model, but its Indian launch date and price have not yet been confirmed.

2027 Kawasaki KLE500 SE SmartRide: What's New?

The biggest update is Kawasaki's SmartRide technology, which automatically manages clutch engagement when the motorcycle starts moving or comes to a stop.

Unlike a conventional motorcycle, where the rider must operate the clutch lever when pulling away and stopping, the SmartRide system reduces the need for these actions. Riders can still use the clutch lever and gear-shift pedal to change gears while moving.

The new SE SmartRide also receives tubeless tyres on its spoke wheels. This is a practical upgrade for adventure riders because tubeless tyres can often be repaired more conveniently after a puncture, depending on the damage and tyre condition.

Key highlights include:

  • 451cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine

  • Reported maximum output of 45hp

  • Peak torque of 42.6Nm

  • Mechanical SmartRide self-engaging clutch

  • Tubeless tyres with spoke wheels

  • 21-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel setup

  • Adjustable windscreen

  • Long-travel suspension

  • Selectable ABS

  • Adventure-oriented riding ergonomics

These changes make the new variant more appealing to riders who want the traditional experience of a manual motorcycle with less effort during frequent stops.

SmartRide Technology: How Does It Work?

The most important feature of the 2027 Kawasaki KLE500 SE SmartRide is its mechanical clutch system.

Kawasaki integrates a compact centrifugal starting clutch into a conventional clutch assembly. The system automatically manages clutch engagement and disengagement at low engine speeds, reducing the need for the rider to operate the clutch lever when starting or stopping.

In simple terms, riders can pull away from a standstill without manually feathering the clutch and can come to a stop without repeatedly operating the lever.

The system is entirely mechanical and does not require electronic actuators to control clutch engagement.

However, SmartRide does not turn the KLE500 into a fully automatic motorcycle. The rider still changes gears using the conventional clutch lever and gear-shift pedal while riding.

This makes the system different from a traditional automatic transmission and also distinguishes it from Honda's E-Clutch technology, which uses electronic actuators to control clutch operation.

Why Is This Useful?

In congested cities, riders frequently accelerate, slow down and stop at traffic signals. Repeated clutch operation can become tiring, particularly during long commutes.

SmartRide is designed to reduce that workload while retaining the familiar manual gearbox experience.

For adventure touring, it could also make slow-speed riding and repeated starts more manageable. However, the rider must still select gears appropriately and maintain control of the motorcycle.

Engine and Performance

The Kawasaki KLE500 SE SmartRide continues to use a 451cc liquid-cooled, parallel-twin engine.

The engine produces a reported 45hp at 9,000rpm and 42.6Nm of peak torque at 6,000rpm. These figures remain unchanged compared with the existing KLE500 SE.

The parallel-twin engine is designed to provide a balance between highway performance and manageable power delivery on uneven surfaces.

The SmartRide system does not increase engine power or torque. Instead, it changes how the clutch behaves when starting and stopping, making the motorcycle easier to manage in certain riding conditions.

Kawasaki has not announced any additional engine-performance changes for the SmartRide variant.

Design and Adventure Styling

The KLE500 SE SmartRide retains the rally-inspired design of the KLE500 range. Its tall front cowl, compact fuel tank, upright riding position and long-travel suspension give it the appearance of a motorcycle designed for mixed road conditions.

The motorcycle combines familiar street-bike styling with design influences from Kawasaki's off-road KX motocross range.

The tall windscreen is designed to reduce wind pressure during highway journeys, while the bodywork allows the rider to move around more freely when riding off-road.

The SE version also features hand guards and a large skid plate, which contribute to its adventure-focused appearance and help protect components during certain off-road encounters.

For the 2027 SmartRide variant, Kawasaki has announced a Pearl Blizzard White colour option.

Wheels, Suspension and Off-Road Capability

The KLE500 SE SmartRide retains a 21-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear wheel. This combination is commonly used on adventure motorcycles because the larger front wheel can help negotiate uneven surfaces and obstacles.

The new SmartRide version combines spoke wheels with tubeless tyres, adding convenience without abandoning the motorcycle's adventure-oriented wheel design.

The suspension package includes a KYB inverted front fork and a rear Uni-Trak suspension system.

The suspension travel is intended to provide flexibility across paved roads, gravel tracks and rougher surfaces.

The 16-litre fuel tank is designed to support longer journeys between fuel stops. Actual range will depend on riding conditions, speed, load and fuel consumption.

Tubeless Tyres: A Practical Upgrade

The introduction of tubeless tyres is another important difference between the KLE500 SE SmartRide and the standard SE's tube-type setup.

With a tubeless tyre, certain punctures can be repaired without removing an inner tube. This can simplify roadside repairs when the damage is suitable for a plug repair.

Tubeless tyres do not eliminate punctures, and sidewall damage or larger cuts may still require professional attention or tyre replacement.

Kawasaki has also introduced a new 150/70-17 rear rim size for the SmartRide version, giving riders additional tyre-replacement options.

For adventure touring, where riders may travel far from repair facilities, this change can be particularly useful.

Braking and Safety Features

The KLE500 SE SmartRide retains the KLE500's braking hardware and selectable ABS functionality.

Selectable ABS allows riders to adjust the system's operation according to riding conditions and preferences. This can be useful off-road, where some experienced riders prefer different braking behaviour on loose surfaces.

The correct use of ABS depends on the conditions and applicable local regulations. Riders should follow the owner's manual and leave safety systems enabled wherever required.

The motorcycle's upright ergonomics, wide handlebars and carefully positioned footpegs are also designed to support control while seated or standing.

SmartRide adds convenience by reducing clutch effort, but it does not replace proper riding technique, training or protective equipment.
