E20 Fuel Gets Safety Clearance, But What About Mileage?

The Government of India has issued a detailed clarification in support of its ethanol blending programme, stating that E20 fuel has been scientifically validated, is subject to continuous monitoring, and is not responsible for the concerns and claims being circulated on social media.

PIB Issues Clarification on E20 Fuel Safety

Issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas through the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the statement addresses concerns over engine reliability, insurance coverage, water contamination, and viral social media claims that ethanol-blended fuel attracts ants and other insects.

The Government of India has exempted petrol blended with 22% to 30% ethanol from excise duty, signalling a clear intent to push biofuel adoption beyond E20 and further reduce dependence on imported

According to the government, no widespread instances of engine failure linked to E20 fuel have been reported since its rollout. The clarification further states that the ethanol used in fuel blending is industrially processed and free of residual sugars, dismissing viral claims that it attracts ants or other insects.

The government also reiterated that the ethanol blending programme has been rolled out in consultation with oil marketing companies, automobile manufacturers, fuel testing agencies, and other key stakeholders. It noted that the initiative has contributed to reducing crude oil imports, strengthening the country's energy security, and providing additional support to the agricultural sector.

However, while the PIB statement seeks to dispel safety concerns and counter misinformation surrounding E20 fuel, it stops short of addressing several issues that are of direct concern to vehicle owners. Notably, the clarification does not discuss the impact of higher ethanol blends on fuel efficiency, day-to-day running costs, or the overall financial burden on consumers. Questions regarding potential changes in mileage and whether any savings from reduced fuel imports translate into benefits for motorists remain unanswered.

Ethanol contains less energy per litre than conventional petrol, which can lead to a reduction in fuel efficiency as the ethanol content in the fuel increases. While the government has highlighted the environmental and energy security benefits of ethanol blending, the PIB clarification does not address whether motorists may experience lower mileage when using E20 fuel or higher ethanol blends such as E85. As a result, questions regarding the real-world impact of these fuels on fuel economy and running costs remain unanswered.

While the PIB statement focuses on safety, reliability and misinformation-related concerns, it does not examine the economic impact of higher ethanol blends on vehicle owners. The clarification makes no reference to cost-per-kilometre comparisons or whether reduced fuel prices, where applicable, are sufficient to offset any potential reduction in fuel efficiency. As a result, questions surrounding the overall cost-effectiveness of E20 fuel for consumers remain unresolved.

The PIB statement also does not address whether consumers receive any direct financial benefit from ethanol blending, particularly in cases where vehicles designed to run on higher ethanol blends may come at a higher upfront cost while also offering lower fuel efficiency.

Another aspect not addressed is the impact of ethanol’s lower energy content compared to petrol. Industry experts have long acknowledged that ethanol contains less energy per litre than conventional petrol, which can influence vehicle range and fuel economy.

The government’s latest clarification focuses primarily on defending the scientific validity, safety, and implementation of the ethanol blending programme. Questions related to consumer economics, fuel efficiency, and long-term ownership costs remain outside the scope of the statement.
