Indian-Made EV Exports Surge 14 Times as Global Demand for Electric Cars Grows

Indian-made electric vehicles are witnessing strong growth in international markets, with exports recording a massive 14-fold increase during the April-June 2026 quarter. The growth highlights India’s rising position as a global hub for electric vehicle manufacturing.

India exported 15,641 electric cars in the June quarter of 2026, compared to just 1,122 units during the same period last year, marking a significant 14x jump in exports. The surge has been mainly driven by increasing global demand for Indian-built electric vehicles.

The biggest contributor to this growth has been Maruti Suzuki’s e-Vitara, the company’s first electric SUV. The model has quickly gained importance as an export-focused product, with 15,210 units shipped to 47 international markets during the quarter. Manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat facility, the e-Vitara is currently being exported to several global markets, including Europe.

The strong performance of Indian EV exports has also encouraged other manufacturers to expand their international electric vehicle plans. Companies like Tata Motors and Mahindra are preparing to introduce their electric models in overseas markets. Tata is working towards expanding the global presence of its electric SUV lineup, while Mahindra is exploring opportunities to strengthen its EV footprint internationally.

Growing EV exports can provide several benefits to Indian manufacturers. Higher production volumes can help reduce manufacturing costs, improve economies of scale, and make electric vehicles more competitive in global markets. For EV makers, international demand can create additional growth opportunities beyond domestic sales.

The rise in global interest toward affordable electric vehicles, along with increasing fuel costs and the shift toward cleaner mobility, is creating new opportunities for Indian automakers. With competitive pricing, improving technology, and expanding production capabilities, Indian electric vehicles are becoming increasingly attractive to buyers worldwide.

The rapid growth of EV exports marks an important milestone for India’s electric mobility sector and strengthens the country’s position in the global EV ecosystem
