For several years, India's electric vehicle market largely relied on EVs based on existing petrol and diesel platforms. This approach helped automakers introduce electric models quickly while keeping development costs under control. However, Mahindra took a different approach with its Electric Origin SUV range.
With models such as the BE 6, XEV 9e and XEV 9S, Mahindra developed a dedicated electric vehicle platform, distinctive styling and a new software architecture from the ground up. This strategy has helped the company establish a strong position in India's premium electric SUV segment.
Dedicated EV Platform Gives Mahindra an Edge
At the core of Mahindra's Electric Origin SUVs is the INGLO platform, a dedicated architecture designed specifically for electric vehicles. Unlike platforms adapted from ICE models, the INGLO architecture allows Mahindra to optimise battery packaging, cabin space, weight distribution, driving dynamics and charging capabilities.
The dedicated platform also allows the SUVs to have a distinctive design that does not rely on styling elements from conventional Mahindra models. Their futuristic exterior design, unique lighting signatures and EV-focused cabins give them a strong road presence.
Technology-Focused Interiors
Technology is one of the biggest attractions of Mahindra's Electric Origin range. The company has introduced several premium features that were previously uncommon in this price segment.
Depending on the model and variant, the SUVs offer features such as:
The XEV 9S further expands the range with a three-row configuration, adding greater practicality for larger families.
Rear-Wheel Drive Adds a Performance Advantage
Mahindra has also focused on driving dynamics. Rear-wheel drive is a key feature across the Electric Origin lineup, giving these SUVs a different character compared with many mainstream electric SUVs that use front-wheel-drive layouts.
Performance-focused features such as Drift Mode further highlight Mahindra's attempt to make its electric SUVs engaging to drive.
Single-motor versions can deliver up to around 282 bhp, with the quickest versions capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in approximately 6.7 seconds. The platform also offers strong charging capability, supporting up to 11.2kW AC charging and 180kW DC fast charging, depending on the variant.
Premium Features at Competitive Prices
One of Mahindra's biggest strengths is the amount of technology and equipment offered for the price. Features such as an AR Head-Up Display, premium Harman Kardon audio, advanced ADAS, triple-screen displays, semi-active suspension and self-parking technology are typically associated with more expensive premium EVs.
The Electric Origin range therefore provides buyers with a combination of premium technology, performance and modern design without moving into the traditional luxury-car price bracket.
The current price positioning includes:
|
Model |
Price Range / Top Price |
|
Up to ₹26.9 lakh |
|
|
Up to ₹30.5 lakh |
|
|
Up to ₹30.7 lakh |
Strong Sales Reflect Growing Customer Interest
Mahindra's dedicated EV strategy has also received a positive response from buyers. Electric Origin SUV sales reached 6,508 units in March 2026, followed by 6,023 units in April, 6,343 units in May and 7,174 units in June 2026.
The company also crossed the 50,000-unit sales milestone for its Electric Origin SUVs in April 2026, highlighting growing demand for its new-generation electric models.
The success of the BE 6, XEV 9e and XEV 9S demonstrates that Indian customers are increasingly looking beyond traditional luxury brands for premium electric vehicles. Mahindra has combined a dedicated EV platform with advanced technology, strong performance, distinctive styling and competitive pricing.
The Electric Origin range has raised expectations in India's premium EV market and could influence how other manufacturers approach their next generation of electric SUVs. With further developments expected in the EV space, Mahindra's focus on dedicated electric architecture and technology could remain an important part of its future strategy
