Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ Review: A Performance Sedan with Everyday Practicality

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ brings together AMG performance and plug-in hybrid efficiency in one sophisticated package. Powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine paired with an electric motor, it delivers 585 hp and 750 Nm, while the AMG Dynamic Plus Package briefly boosts output to 612 hp. The result is blistering performance with a 0-100 km/h time of just 4.0 seconds, along with an electric-only driving range suited for daily commuting.

Sporty Yet Elegant Design:-

The E 53 stands apart from the standard E-Class with its signature Panamericana grille, larger air intakes, flared wheel arches, quad exhaust outlets, 20-inch alloy wheels and subtle rear spoiler. It looks sporty without being overly aggressive, maintaining the premium appeal expected from a Mercedes-AMG.

Premium Interior with AMG Character:-

Inside, the cabin blends luxury and sportiness with AMG sports seats, open-pore wood trim and the latest MBUX infotainment system. Rear-seat comfort remains good for two passengers, although the plug-in hybrid battery reduces boot space to 370 litres, making practicality slightly lower than the regular E-Class.

Powerful Hybrid Performance:-

The E 53 offers multiple drive modes, including Electric (EL), Comfort, Sport and Sport+. In Sport+ mode, the hybrid system delivers instant acceleration, sharp throttle response and an engaging straight-six exhaust note, while Comfort mode transforms it into a refined long-distance cruiser. Electric mode provides smooth, silent city driving with minimal vibration.

Ride, Handling and Driving Experience:-

Despite weighing around 2.4 tonnes, the E 53 feels remarkably agile thanks to adaptive AMG suspension, rear-wheel steering and the rear-biased 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. The chassis remains composed through corners, offering impressive grip and stability without sacrificing ride comfort.

Electric Range and Efficiency:-

The 28.6 kWh battery pack offers a claimed electric-only range of up to 100 km, with a practical real-world range of around 75-90 km. Charging through an 11 kW AC charger takes approximately three hours, making it convenient for home or workplace charging.

Verdict:

Starting at ₹1.45 crore (ex-showroom), the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ successfully combines thrilling AMG performance with everyday usability and hybrid efficiency. While the brake pedal feel and low-speed gearbox calibration could be improved, the E 53 remains one of the most well-rounded luxury performance sedans currently available, offering an ideal balance of speed, comfort and advanced hybrid technology
