Volvo Trucks has placed India among the first markets for its latest heavy-duty engine platform, marking an important development for the country’s premium commercial vehicle segment. The new-generation D13 diesel and G13 gas engines are part of Volvo’s biggest heavy-duty engine renewal in more than a decade.
India has been included in the first wave of markets alongside Europe, Morocco and Turkey. Production of the new engines is expected to begin in January 2027 at Volvo’s engine facility in Skövde, Sweden.

Volvo says the new D13 engine can produce up to 560 hp and 2,900 Nm of torque, while the G13 gas engine is rated up to 500 hp and 2,800 Nm.
India has become an important market for premium heavy-duty trucks, particularly in sectors such as mining, infrastructure, construction, long-distance haulage and over-dimensional cargo transportation.
Volvo Trucks currently operates at the premium end of India's heavy-duty truck market, with models such as the FM and FMX serving demanding applications. The company believes the new engine family can address a broad range of operating requirements with fewer engine architectures.
The D13 platform covers power outputs from 380 hp to 560 hp globally, giving Volvo flexibility across different heavy-duty applications. However, the company has clarified that not every global power rating will necessarily be offered in India.
The new engine platform has been developed with a focus on improving power, torque, fuel efficiency, emissions and drivability.
According to Volvo Trucks, the new platform can deliver up to 4% lower fuel consumption compared with the engine it replaces when combined with the company's latest fuel-saving technologies.
The new 13-litre diesel engine also delivers higher power and torque, which can be particularly useful for heavy loads, gradients and demanding haulage operations.
Another major feature of the new engine platform is its compatibility with several renewable and alternative fuels.
The platform has been developed to support fuels including biodiesel/B100, HVO, biogas/Bio-LNG and future green hydrogen applications, depending on the engine and market. This gives Volvo greater flexibility as transport operators gradually move towards lower-carbon fuel options.
