Hyundai Motor India has introduced a new Traffic Quality Index (TQI) designed to help commuters understand traffic conditions and plan their journeys more effectively. The initiative uses a standardised 1-to-10 rating system along with colour-coded traffic levels to provide a quick indication of road conditions.
The Hyundai Traffic Quality Index is currently available across Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata.
The Traffic Quality Index provides commuters with a simple way to understand the prevailing traffic situation. The system rates traffic conditions on a scale of 1 to 10, with different colour codes representing the level of congestion.

A lower score indicates relatively smooth traffic, while a higher score represents heavier congestion and potentially longer travel times.
The system combines information from multiple traffic-related sources to provide commuters with updated information. This includes real-time traffic data, on-ground traffic intelligence and advisories from traffic authorities.
The index also takes into account important developments that can affect traffic flow, including:
The information is communicated through radio programming, allowing commuters to receive traffic updates without needing to use their mobile phones while driving.
The main objective of the Hyundai Traffic Quality Index is to make traffic information easier to understand and use. Instead of relying on complicated traffic data, commuters can refer to the 1-to-10 rating and colour-coded system to quickly assess road conditions.
The information can help motorists anticipate areas of congestion, consider alternative routes and plan their journeys according to current traffic conditions.
Hyundai Motor India’s Head of Marketing, Virat Khullar, said the initiative is aimed at providing commuters with actionable information that can help them make better mobility decisions.
The Traffic Quality Index has been introduced in seven major Indian cities:
These cities have been selected to provide commuters in some of India's busiest urban centres with a more standardised understanding of traffic conditions.
Hyundai has indicated that the Traffic Quality Index could be expanded to more cities as the initiative develops. The system is also expected to evolve with improved data capabilities and additional formats for delivering real-time traffic information.
With increasing congestion across major Indian cities, the new system could provide commuters with a simpler way to understand traffic conditions and make informed travel decisions
