New Hero Adventure Bike Patent Surfaces, Could Hint at a Modern Impulse Revival

Hero MotoCorp could be exploring a new entry-level adventure motorcycle, with a recently surfaced patent revealing an off-road-focused bike that bears some resemblance to the original Hero Impulse. The design has sparked speculation that Hero may be considering a modern interpretation of its first mainstream adventure motorcycle.

The Hero Impulse was introduced in India in 2011 and remained on sale until 2017. It was eventually succeeded by the Xpulse 200 in 2019, which brought a larger engine and a more modern package. Despite being ahead of its time, the Impulse never managed to gain widespread acceptance in the Indian market.

The newly leaked patent could indicate that Hero is once again exploring a simpler and more affordable ADV motorcycle.

New Hero ADV Patent Reveals Simple Off-Road Motorcycle

The patent images show a motorcycle designed primarily for off-road use. The bike appears considerably slimmer and simpler than Hero's current Xpulse models, suggesting that it could be positioned below the Xpulse 200 in terms of pricing and engine capacity.

The engine visible in the patent appears to be an air-cooled unit, with no obvious oil-cooling radiator. Its design also appears to feature a carburettor and kick starter, suggesting a relatively basic powertrain. Based on its proportions, the engine could potentially have a displacement in the 150cc-200cc range.

If introduced in this form, the motorcycle could be aimed at markets where simpler and more affordable motorcycles continue to have strong demand. Hero MotoCorp has a significant international presence across regions such as South America and Africa, where it also sells motorcycles that are not offered in India.

Adventure-Focused Hardware

Despite its simple engine setup, the motorcycle shown in the patent appears to have several features associated with adventure bikes.

The hardware visible in the design includes:

  • Long-travel suspension at both ends
  • Front and rear disc brakes
  • Wire-spoke wheels
  • Larger front wheel
  • High-mounted exhaust
  • Front beak
  • Rear luggage rack
  • Upright riding position
  • Single-piece seat

The combination suggests that the motorcycle has been designed to handle rough terrain rather than being a conventional commuter motorcycle with adventure-inspired styling.

Styling Reminiscent of the Original Impulse

The design is perhaps the most interesting aspect of the patent. The motorcycle features a slim body and compact proportions that recall the Hero Impulse.

The front section gets a prominent beak, while the headlamp arrangement appears to draw inspiration from the Impulse's distinctive front-end design. The patent bike also appears to feature LED daytime running lights and what could be LED projector lighting.

The fuel tank is relatively narrow, although the extended tank shrouds give the motorcycle a more muscular appearance. Simple side panels, a single-piece seat, LED indicators and an LED tail lamp complete the design.

The instrument cluster also appears similar in shape to the unit used on the Xpulse 200, although the final production motorcycle could receive a different setup.

Will Hero Launch It in India?

An Indian launch remains uncertain. The motorcycle shown in the patent appears to use a carburetted engine, which would not meet India's current emission requirements without significant changes.

However, Hero could potentially adapt the concept for India by using one of its existing fuel-injected engines. A version powered by the Xtreme 160R 4V's engine, combined with technology such as the TFT instrument cluster from the Xpulse 210, could create an interesting entry-level adventure motorcycle.

Such a model would allow Hero MotoCorp to position an affordable ADV below the Xpulse 200 while bringing back some of the character that made the original Impulse unique.

For now, the patent should not be considered confirmation of a production model. However, if Hero does decide to revive the Impulse concept with modern hardware and a more accessible price point, it could give the company a strong new offering in the entry-level adventure motorcycle segment.
