Kia India has expanded its three-row MPV range with the launch of factory-fitted CNG versions of the Carens and Carens Clavis. The new CNG variants are aimed at buyers looking for a practical family vehicle with an alternative fuel option and lower running costs.

The Kia Carens CNG is available in the Premium (O) trim, with prices starting at around ₹12.12 lakh (ex-showroom). Meanwhile, the Carens Clavis CNG is offered in HTE and HTE (O) variants, priced from around ₹12.39 lakh to ₹13.35 lakh (ex-showroom).

Model CNG Variant Ex-Showroom Price
Kia Carens Premium (O) CNG ₹12.12 lakh
Kia Carens Clavis HTE CNG ₹12.39 lakh
Kia Carens Clavis HTE (O) CNG ₹13.35 lakh

1.5-Litre Petrol-CNG Powertrain

Both MPVs use a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. In CNG mode, the engine produces approximately 96 PS of power and 123 Nm of torque. The CNG setup has been specifically calibrated for the dual-fuel powertrain.

The CNG system uses a 60-litre CNG tank positioned beneath the boot floor, while the standard petrol fuel tank is retained. This gives the Carens and Carens Clavis a dual-fuel setup without removing their three-row seating configuration.

CNG-Specific Mechanical Changes

Kia has made several mechanical changes to accommodate the additional CNG hardware. The suspension has been retuned, while the engine receives CNG-specific calibration. The models also get 16-inch front disc brakes and R16 wheels.

A dedicated fuel-change switch allows the driver to switch between petrol and CNG operation. The instrument display also provides a CNG Distance-to-Empty (DTE) readout through a 4.2-inch colour TFT display.

Boot Space and Seating

Despite the installation of the CNG tank, Kia has retained the three-row layout and spare wheel. With all three rows in use, the available boot space is around 116 litres.

The third-row seat-back frame has also been modified to provide an improved recline angle. This allows the MPVs to retain their family-oriented seating arrangement while accommodating the new CNG hardware.

Kia's First Factory-Fitted CNG Models

The Carens and Carens Clavis CNG mark an important addition to Kia India's powertrain portfolio. The company had previously offered a CNG option on the Carens through dealer-level fitment, but these new versions feature a factory-integrated CNG system.

With the new variants, Kia now gives customers a CNG option in the three-row MPV segment while retaining the petrol tank and manual transmission. The company has also introduced CNG variants in relatively accessible trims rather than restricting the powertrain only to the top-end versions.
