Mahindra XEV 9S Gets New 6-Seater Layout With Captain Seats

Mahindra has expanded the XEV 9S electric SUV lineup with a new six-seat configuration, giving buyers the option of individual captain seats in the second row. The move adds a more premium and comfort-oriented cabin layout to the SUV, which was introduced as a three-row, seven-seat electric family SUV.

The new arrangement changes the seating format from a conventional second-row bench to two individual captain seats, creating a 2+2+2 layout. This setup is expected to appeal to families seeking greater second-row comfort and customers who prefer a more upmarket cabin experience.

New 6-Seater XEV 9S Gets Captain Seats

The biggest difference in the new version is the second row. Instead of a three-person bench, the XEV 9S now gets two separate captain seats with individual armrests. The gap between the seats also creates a convenient passage to the third row.

This configuration gives passengers more individual space and makes the cabin feel more open. It could also be particularly useful for chauffeur-driven owners who generally place greater importance on second-row comfort.

According to the information provided for the new configuration, captain seats will be available from Pack Two Above, Pack Three and Pack Three Above, rather than on the lower Pack One Above version.

The existing XEV 9S range currently includes Pack One Above, Pack Two Above, Pack Three and Pack Three Above trims, with battery choices spanning 59kWh, 70kWh and 79kWh depending on the variant.

XEV 9S Continues With a Feature-Rich Cabin

The new seating arrangement builds on an already well-equipped interior. Higher-spec XEV 9S versions feature a large triple-screen dashboard layout, ventilated seats, powered Boss Mode, a panoramic skyroof, ambient lighting and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with Dolby Atmos.

Other notable technology includes connected features, 5G connectivity, digital-key functionality, an air-purification system, a 360-degree camera and advanced driver-assistance technology. Mahindra's official equipment list also includes features such as L2+ ADAS, multiple airbags, adaptive suspension on applicable versions and a five-link rear suspension.

No Changes to Battery or Electric Powertrain

The introduction of the six-seat layout does not bring any announced mechanical changes. The XEV 9S continues to use Mahindra's INGLO electric platform and rear-wheel-drive configuration.

Depending on the variant, the SUV is available with 59kWh, 70kWh and 79kWh battery packs. The 59kWh version has an ARAI-certified range of 521km, while the 70kWh and 79kWh versions are rated at 600km and 679km respectively.

The 79kWh variants produce around 282bhp, while Mahindra offers fast-charging capability of up to 180kW on the larger battery configuration. Mahindra says the 79kWh version can charge from 20% to 80% in around 20 minutes with a suitable DC charger.

Current listings show the XEV 9S ranging from approximately ₹20.65 lakh to ₹29.95 lakh ex-showroom, depending on battery and trim.

Six-Seat Layout Could Broaden XEV 9S Appeal

The addition of captain seats gives the XEV 9S a more premium alternative to its traditional seven-seat configuration. Buyers who rarely use the middle position in the second row may prefer the extra personal space offered by the 2+2+2 arrangement.

With its three-row cabin, long-range battery options and extensive technology package, the new six-seat version could make the XEV 9S more attractive to buyers who want SUV practicality combined with a more luxurious passenger experience.

Conclusion

The new six-seater configuration gives the Mahindra XEV 9S another way to differentiate itself in the growing electric SUV segment. By replacing the second-row bench with individual captain seats, Mahindra has focused on passenger comfort without changing the SUV's core electric powertrain or three-row character.

The new layout is likely to be most appealing to customers who prioritise second-row comfort, easier access to the third row and a more premium cabin experience
