New Maruti Victoris Spied Testing: E85 Flex-Fuel or Biogas Powertrain?

Khyati Sharma 2026-10-21

Maruti Suzuki Victoris could be at the centre of fresh speculation after reports of a test vehicle raised questions about a possible alternative-fuel powertrain. The key question is whether the SUV cars could be associated with E85 flex-fuel technology or compressed biogas (CBG).

However, the exact purpose of the reported testing has not been independently confirmed. Maruti Suzuki cars has not officially announced an E85 flex-fuel or dedicated biogas-powered Victoris. Therefore, the possibility of a new powertrain should be treated as speculation rather than a confirmed upcoming launch.

The development is still worth following because Maruti Suzuki has been exploring alternative fuels alongside petrol, CNG and hybrid technology. An additional powertrain could eventually broaden the Victoris lineup if the company decides to introduce one.

Maruti Suzuki Victoris: Existing Engine Options

The Maruti Suzuki Victoris was launched in India in September 2025 and is sold through the company's ARENA dealership network. The midsize SUV combines modern styling, a technology-focused cabin and multiple powertrain options.

The existing lineup includes a 1.5-litre petrol engine with Smart Hybrid technology, a strong-hybrid powertrain and a factory-fitted S-CNG option. Selected petrol variants also offer the ALLGRIP Select four-wheel-drive system.

Its equipment includes a touchscreen infotainment system, connected-car functions, a panoramic sunroof and a range of safety features, depending on the variant.

These options allow buyers to choose between conventional petrol performance, hybrid efficiency and CNG running costs. An E85 or CBG-compatible version, if developed, would represent a further step in the SUV's powertrain strategy.

Could the New Victoris Get E85 Flex-Fuel Technology?

E85 is an ethanol-petrol fuel blend containing up to approximately 85% ethanol, with the remaining portion primarily gasoline. The exact blend depends on the applicable fuel specifications and market conditions.

A vehicle designed for flex-fuel operation requires compatible engine components, fuel-system materials and electronic controls. These systems allow the engine to operate on approved petrol-ethanol blends without compromising normal operation.

Maruti Suzuki has demonstrated its interest in this technology through flex-fuel development, including a flex-fuel Wagon R introduced in India in 2026.

However, this does not establish that the Victoris is undergoing E85 testing. The company has not confirmed the SUV's compatibility with E85, its engine specifications or a possible launch date.

If a flex-fuel Victoris eventually enters development, details such as approved ethanol blends, fuel economy, performance and market availability will need to be confirmed by the manufacturer.

Is a Biogas-Powered Victoris Also Possible?

Compressed biogas is another alternative fuel that has attracted attention in India. It is produced from organic materials such as agricultural residues, food waste and animal waste. After purification and processing, it can be used as a vehicle fuel when it meets the required quality standards.

CBG can be used in compatible natural-gas vehicle systems, making it relevant to manufacturers that already offer CNG-powered models.

Maruti Suzuki has explored compressed-biogas initiatives, but that does not mean a dedicated biogas-powered Victoris has been confirmed.

The distinction between CNG and CBG is important. CNG is compressed natural gas, while CBG is produced from organic waste and processed to meet fuel specifications. Their main combustible component is methane, but the source and production process differ.

A compatible vehicle may be able to use qualifying CBG, subject to fuel quality, vehicle requirements and applicable regulations. At present, no official announcement confirms a dedicated CBG variant of the Victoris.

Why Are Alternative Fuels Important for India?

Indian automakers are exploring different powertrain technologies to improve energy efficiency, diversify fuel sources and reduce dependence on conventional petroleum fuels.

Ethanol can be produced from suitable agricultural feedstocks, while CBG can convert organic waste into usable energy. Both technologies depend on sustainable production methods, suitable infrastructure and consistent fuel availability.

Hybrid vehicles provide another option by combining an internal-combustion engine with electric assistance. The Victoris already offers a strong-hybrid version for customers seeking improved fuel efficiency without depending entirely on public charging infrastructure.

For buyers, the practical benefits of any alternative-fuel vehicle will depend on fuel prices, availability, maintenance costs and the vehicle's overall efficiency.

Will the New Maruti Victoris Launch Soon?

There is currently no confirmed launch date for an E85 flex-fuel or dedicated biogas-powered Victoris. The petrol, strong-hybrid and S-CNG versions remain the established powertrain options.

If Maruti Suzuki decides to introduce another fuel technology, the company would need to confirm its specifications, fuel compatibility, performance figures, emissions compliance and pricing.

Until then, buyers should not assume that the reported test vehicle represents a new production model or a confirmed alternative-fuel variant.

Conclusion

The reported Maruti Victoris testing story has raised questions about the possibility of E85 flex-fuel or compressed-biogas technology. Maruti Suzuki has explored alternative fuels, and the Victoris already offers petrol, strong-hybrid and S-CNG powertrains.

However, an E85-compatible or dedicated biogas-powered Victoris has not been officially confirmed. The purpose of the reported testing remains unverified, and further information is needed before drawing conclusions.

For now, the development is best treated as an unconfirmed automotive story. An official announcement from Maruti Suzuki will clarify whether the Victoris is set to receive another powertrain option.
