VinFast VF 5 Spotted Testing in Bengaluru, Could Take on India’s Sub-4-Metre EV Segment

VinFast appears to be preparing for a stronger presence in India’s high-volume SUV market. The company’s upcoming VF 5 electric SUV has been spotted undergoing road testing in Bengaluru, giving fresh clues about its potential entry into the country’s sub-4-metre EV segment.

The VF 5 could become an important model for VinFast as the automaker looks to expand beyond the VF 6 and VF 7. The company is also expected to introduce the VF MPV 7 in the future. With growing demand for compact SUVs in India, the VF 5 could compete with electric models such as the Tata Punch EV, Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV.

VinFast VF 5 Gets a More SUV-Focused Design

The test vehicle spotted in Bengaluru appears to be the second-generation VF 5, which brings significant design changes compared with the version currently sold in international markets.

Unlike the hatchback-inspired appearance of the existing VF 5, the new model adopts a more upright and rugged SUV stance. The front section appears to feature a flatter bonnet, a closed-off grille area and vertically positioned headlamps. Full-width LED daytime running lights are placed higher on the fascia, while the lower bumper gets a wider design with horizontal elements.

The side profile also looks sharper than the outgoing version. Circular wheel arches, black body cladding and conventional door handles continue to be part of the design. The recently spotted test vehicles appear to be lower variants, as they feature steel wheels.

At the rear, the new VF 5 gets a raked windscreen, roof-mounted spoiler and a chunky bumper. The SUV is also expected to retain its distinctive tail-lamp design, with the production version potentially featuring a connected lighting setup.

Globally, the current-generation VF 5 measures 3,967 mm in length, 1,723 mm in width and 1,579 mm in height, with a 2,514 mm wheelbase.

Updated Cabin and Feature List

Earlier test vehicles have provided glimpses of the updated interior. The second-generation VF 5 is expected to feature a more modern cabin with a large freestanding touchscreen infotainment system.

The redesigned dashboard could be complemented by a two-spoke steering wheel and revised centre console. Depending on the variant, VinFast could also offer features such as a sunroof, ventilated front seats, TFT instrument cluster and rear AC vents.

Safety equipment is also expected to play an important role, with the VF 5 potentially offering a comprehensive package of safety and driver-assistance technologies, including ADAS.

VinFast VF 5 Battery and Performance

VinFast has not yet confirmed whether the second-generation VF 5 will receive an updated powertrain. The current international model is offered with 29.6 kWh and 37.23 kWh battery options.

The existing VF 5 uses a single front-mounted electric motor producing around 134 hp and 135 Nm. With the larger battery pack, the model delivers a claimed range of approximately 326.4 km under the NEDC testing cycle.

The current model can reportedly charge from 10% to 70% in around 33 minutes using a fast charger.

Could the VF 5 Be Priced Competitively in India?

Pricing will be a key factor if VinFast introduces the VF 5 in India. The compact SUV segment is highly competitive, particularly with the growing number of locally manufactured electric vehicles.

A high level of localisation could allow VinFast to position the VF 5 more competitively in the Indian market. However, the company has not yet officially confirmed the India launch timeline, specifications, battery options or pricing of the second-generation model.

The latest Bengaluru sightings indicate that VinFast is actively evaluating the VF 5 for Indian roads, making it one of the more interesting upcoming compact electric SUVs to watch.
