Tata Motors remained India's largest electric passenger vehicle manufacturer in September, registering 14,792 units.
The company's EV registrations more than doubled compared with the 7,369 units recorded in September 2025, resulting in 100.7% year-on-year growth. Tata also improved its monthly performance by 7%, compared with 13,825 units in August.
With 14,792 registrations, Tata Motors controlled 42.2% of India's electric passenger vehicle market during September.
Its market share was also slightly higher than the 41.1% recorded a year earlier, indicating that Tata was able to maintain its leadership even as competition in the EV segment intensified.
Mahindra cars continued to occupy second place with 7,782 electric vehicle registrations.
The company's September volume increased 95.9% compared with 3,973 units in the same month last year. Mahindra also recorded a healthy 14% month-on-month increase from the 6,827 units registered in August.
The manufacturer held a 22.2% market share, making it one of the biggest contributors to India's rapid EV growth.
Tata Motors and Mahindra together accounted for 22,574 registrations, equivalent to around 64.4% of the total electric passenger vehicle market.
MG motor registered 5,242 electric cars in September 2026, retaining the third position.
Its registrations increased 9.1% from the 4,803 units recorded in September 2025 and were 6.3% higher than the 4,933 units registered in August.
However, MG's market share declined sharply as the overall EV market expanded much faster than the company's volumes. Its share stood at 15% in September 2026, compared with 26.8% a year earlier.
This means MG remains an important EV player, but the rapidly expanding competition has reduced its proportion of the overall market.
VinFast car was one of the biggest developments in the September EV registration rankings.
The company registered 2,964 electric cars, placing fourth overall with an 8.5% market share.
VinFast's year-on-year growth percentage is unusually high because the company had registered only six vehicles in September 2025. Therefore, the 49,300% figure is largely a reflection of the extremely small previous-year base rather than a meaningful measure of normalised growth.
More importantly, VinFast's registrations increased 32.4% month-on-month, rising from 2,239 units in August.
Kia cars registered 1,263 electric vehicles in September, up from 598 units a year earlier.
This resulted in 111.2% year-on-year growth, while monthly registrations increased an impressive 48.4% from 851 units in August.
Kia's market share reached 3.6%, putting the company ahead of several established manufacturers in the electric passenger vehicle segment.
Maruti Suzuki recorded 1,104 electric vehicle registrations during September.
There is no comparable September 2025 registration figure in the supplied dataset, so a year-on-year growth percentage cannot be calculated.
However, the company saw a 25% month-on-month decline compared with the 1,472 units registered in August.
Maruti Suzuki accounted for 3.1% of the electric passenger vehicle market in September.
BYD car registered 836 electric cars in September 2026, compared with 732 units during the same month last year.
The company recorded 14.2% year-on-year growth, but its monthly performance was considerably stronger. Registrations increased by 47.4% from August's 567 units.
BYD held a 2.4% market share during the month.
Hyundai car registered 792 electric cars in September, compared with 404 units in September 2025.
This resulted in 96% year-on-year growth, bringing the company close to doubling its electric vehicle registrations.
However, Hyundai's monthly performance was slightly weaker, with registrations declining 5.7% from August's 840 units.
The company held a 2.3% market share in September.
Toyota car registered 218 electric cars during September 2026. The company improved its monthly volume by 29.8% compared with August's 168 registrations and held a 0.6% market share.
Citroen completed the top 10 with 55 registrations. Its September volume was 17% higher than both the 47 units recorded in September 2025 and the 47 units registered in August 2026.
September 2026 was another significant month for India's electric passenger vehicle market. Registrations of 35,048 units represented a 95.4% year-on-year increase, while the 10.3% monthly rise shows that demand remained positive even after a strong August.
Tata Motors continues to have a substantial lead, while Mahindra has established itself as the second-largest EV manufacturer. MG remains a major player, although its market share has fallen as newer products and manufacturers have expanded.
VinFast's rapid rise into fourth place is another notable development, while Kia and BYD also recorded strong monthly growth.
The broader trend suggests that India's electric passenger vehicle market is moving into a significantly higher-volume phase, with an increasing number of manufacturers competing across different price and vehicle segments. Recent industry reporting also points to EV registrations reaching record levels in September, although exact totals vary between Vahan data compilations depending on the download date and methodology.
