New Mahindra Thar Electric Spied: Vision T Design and Interior Details Revealed

Mahindra cars next-generation Thar family is taking shape, and the Vision T concept is expected to play a major role in the SUV's future. The concept was unveiled as an evolution of the earlier Thar.e electric concept, bringing a more production-oriented design and a new-generation platform.

The Vision T previews a future Thar-family SUV car based on Mahindra's new NU_IQ modular platform. Unlike the original Thar.e concept, which was presented specifically as a born-electric SUV, the Vision T platform has been designed to support multiple powertrain technologies, including electric, petrol, diesel and hybrid systems.

Recent testing and patent activity have provided more clues about how Mahindra could take the Vision T from concept to production. However, the company has not yet confirmed the final production name, powertrain specifications or exact launch details.

Vision T Is the New-Generation Thar's Design Preview

Mahindra unveiled the Vision T at its Freedom NU event in August 2025 as one of four concepts developed around the NU_IQ architecture.

The Vision T immediately stood out because of its strong connection with the Thar.e concept shown in 2023. Both SUVs feature a boxy silhouette, upright proportions, short overhangs, large wheel arches and a rugged overall stance.

However, the Vision T moves away from some of the futuristic styling of the original Thar.e and adopts a more realistic design that appears better suited to a production vehicle.

This includes a conventional front grille, more familiar door handles, production-style mirrors and a redesigned lighting signature.

Front Design Looks More Production Ready

The front-end treatment is one of the biggest changes compared with the original Thar.e.

The Vision T features a double-stacked grille design, giving it a stronger visual connection with the existing Thar family. The headlights also use a different LED arrangement, with multiple rectangular lighting elements replacing the more futuristic bracket-style treatment of the original concept.

The bumper appears more conventional while retaining the rugged character expected from a Thar-family SUV.

The overall design is likely to appeal to buyers who want the traditional upright Thar appearance but with a more modern and sophisticated interpretation.

Boxy Profile Retains Thar DNA

The side profile is expected to be one of the strongest elements of the production model.

The Vision T retains the upright body, squared-off wheel arches and short overhangs that give the Thar its distinctive stance. The concept also features a tailgate-mounted spare wheel and rugged exterior elements.

Some design elements have been carried forward from the Thar.e concept, while others have been simplified to make the SUV more realistic for production.

The rear door handle is positioned around the C-pillar, similar to the approach used on the Thar Roxx. The vehicle also retains a strong, upright rear section rather than adopting the more rounded profile of conventional urban SUVs.

Vision T Interior Looks More Practical

The interior of the Vision T represents a major departure from the original Thar.e concept.

While the Thar.e featured an extremely futuristic cabin with an aircraft-style control lever and unconventional steering wheel, the Vision T uses a more conventional interior layout.

The concept features a flat-bottom steering wheel, a separate digital instrument display and a large portrait-oriented central infotainment screen.

This suggests that Mahindra is attempting to balance the futuristic technology expected from a new-generation SUV with controls that are easier for everyday users to understand.

The Vision T also features physical toggle switches on the centre console and steering wheel. This could be particularly useful for an off-road-oriented vehicle where drivers may prefer dedicated controls instead of relying entirely on touchscreen menus.

Large Central Screen and Digital Displays

The dashboard is expected to be one of the most technology-focused areas of the new SUV.

The Vision T concept uses a large vertically positioned infotainment display along with a separate digital driver information screen. The layout is significantly more modern than the current Thar's dashboard.

The portrait screen also creates a more premium appearance and could allow Mahindra to integrate navigation, vehicle settings and connected-car functions into a single interface.

However, the exact screen size, software and production-specification features have not yet been officially confirmed.

Electric Powertrain Is Still a Possibility

The biggest question surrounding the next-generation Thar is its powertrain.

The original Thar.e concept was explicitly developed as an electric SUV and used Mahindra's electric architecture. Mahindra's official announcement described it as a born-electric avatar of the Thar with an AWD electric powertrain.

The newer Vision T is different.

It uses the NU_IQ platform, which Mahindra says is capable of supporting multiple energy sources. This means the production vehicle could potentially be offered with an electric powertrain as well as conventional or hybrid technology.

The exact powertrain strategy for the production Vision T has not been confirmed yet.

If Mahindra chooses to launch an electric version, the SUV could become one of the more distinctive electric lifestyle SUVs in the Indian market.

AWD Could Remain an Important Feature

Off-road capability is a key part of the Thar's identity, and the new platform has been engineered with all-wheel-drive capability in mind.

The NU_IQ architecture can support AWD in both EV and internal-combustion applications. This gives Mahindra flexibility when developing the production version.

For an electric Thar, an AWD configuration could potentially use dual electric motors, providing independent control of the front and rear axles.

However, Mahindra has not yet announced the final motor configuration, battery capacity, range or performance figures.

Expected Launch Timeline

Mahindra has indicated that its new NU_IQ-based SUV family will enter production from 2027 onwards. The Vision T is expected to follow the first models based on the platform.

The production version is therefore still some distance away, and specifications can change before the final vehicle reaches dealerships.

The latest patent activity around the Vision T has nevertheless strengthened expectations that Mahindra is moving ahead with the design. Patent images reportedly show a design very close to the concept, suggesting that several of its distinctive styling elements could survive into the production model.

What the New Thar Could Mean for Mahindra

The Vision T represents a significant change in Mahindra's approach to the Thar.

The current Thar uses a traditional body-on-frame architecture and focuses heavily on mechanical off-road capability. The Vision T, meanwhile, moves to a modern monocoque architecture designed to accommodate several types of powertrains.

This could allow Mahindra to create a more comfortable and technologically advanced Thar while retaining the rugged design and lifestyle appeal associated with the name.

The biggest advantage of the NU_IQ approach is flexibility. Mahindra can potentially offer different powertrain versions without developing an entirely separate vehicle architecture for each one.

New Mahindra Thar Electric: What to Expect

The Vision T appears to be one of Mahindra's most important future SUV concepts. Its connection with the Thar.e makes an electric version particularly interesting, but the company has not yet confirmed that the production Vision T will launch exclusively as an EV.

The design, however, gives us a clear indication of the direction Mahindra is taking. The SUV combines the boxy proportions and rugged identity of the Thar with a more modern cabin, digital technology and a flexible new-generation platform.

If the production model stays close to the Vision T concept, the next-generation Thar could offer a substantially more premium experience while retaining the adventurous character that has made the nameplate popular.

For now, buyers should wait for Mahindra to reveal the final powertrain, battery specifications, range, performance figures and launch timeline before treating any estimated EV specifications as confirmed.
