Tesla cars has crossed the 1,000-unit sales milestone in India, marking an important step for the American electric vehicle manufacturer a little over a year after entering the Indian market. The milestone comes after a sharp improvement in sales during September 2026, when Tesla recorded its strongest monthly performance since beginning deliveries in the country.
According to the latest Vahan-based retail sales data, Tesla recorded 1,017 cumulative retail sales between September 2025 and October 2, 2026. The company's September performance played a major role in pushing it beyond the 1,000-unit mark.
Tesla registered 291 electric cars in September 2026, making it the company's best-ever monthly sales performance in India.
The September figure represents a 322 percent year-on-year increase over the 69 units recorded in September 2025. Tesla also registered a substantial month-on-month improvement, with sales rising from 117 units in August to 291 units in September.
The strong performance also helped Tesla move ahead of Mercedes-Benz in India's luxury electric-car segment for the first time.
BMW cars remained the segment leader with 502 units in September, while Tesla's 291 units placed it second, ahead of Mercedes-Benz's 125 units. Tesla consequently captured around 29.8 percent of the tracked luxury EV segment during the month.
The milestone is particularly notable because Tesla currently has a very limited product portfolio in India.
The Model Y has been responsible for Tesla's sales in the country, with demand accelerating considerably during the middle and latter part of 2026.
Between July and October 2, Tesla delivered 554 Model Ys, accounting for around 54 percent of its cumulative India sales during that period. This indicates that a large portion of Tesla's Indian sales momentum has come relatively recently rather than being spread evenly across its first year.
Tesla initially entered India with the Model Y in July 2025. The SUV was launched as the company's first product in the country, with the original India range consisting of Standard RWD and Long Range RWD versions.
One of the biggest factors behind the recent improvement in Tesla's sales appears to be pricing.
Tesla has subsequently revised its India Model Y range. The company's current India configurator lists the Model Y Premium RWD at ₹50.89 lakh, while the Model Y L Premium AWD is listed at ₹61.99 lakh, both before additional on-road charges.
The lower entry price has brought the Model Y closer to other premium electric SUVs available in India and has potentially widened the pool of buyers considering a Tesla.
The Model Y Premium RWD currently has a claimed 500km WLTP range, while Tesla lists a 201km/h top speed and 0-100km/h acceleration in 5.9 seconds.
Crossing 1,000 units is significant, but Tesla's overall volume remains small compared with India's mainstream electric-car manufacturers.
India's electric passenger vehicle market recorded a record 35,995 retail sales in September 2026, nearly doubling from 18,520 units in September 2025. Tesla's 291 units represented about 0.8 percent of the overall electric passenger vehicle market during the month.
Tata Motors led the market with 14,769 EVs, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra with 7,779 units and JSW MG Motor India with 5,242 units.
This shows the difference between Tesla's position in the overall EV market and its position within the premium electric-car segment. While its overall market share remains limited, it has rapidly become an important player among luxury EV brands.
For Tesla's continued growth in India, charging infrastructure will be an important factor.
Tesla has been expanding its Supercharger network in the country, while its India website provides information about charging locations and charging services.
Tesla says its Superchargers can add substantial range in a short charging session, although actual charging speed depends on factors such as battery condition, temperature, vehicle configuration and state of charge.
The company also offers route planning that can recommend charging stops based on the selected destination and available battery range.
For Indian customers, the availability of fast charging along major highways and within cities will remain important as Tesla attempts to move beyond its early premium customer base.
Crossing 1,000 units does not make Tesla a high-volume manufacturer in India, but it does provide an important indication that the brand is beginning to establish itself in the country's premium EV market.
The company's sales trajectory is particularly interesting because of how quickly volumes have increased during recent months.
Tesla's September performance was more than double its August sales, while the Model Y has become increasingly important to the company's overall India volumes.
The bigger question now is whether Tesla can maintain this momentum over the next several months.
Tesla's future performance in India will depend on several factors.
Pricing will remain one of the biggest considerations. The reduction in the Model Y's entry price has clearly made the vehicle more accessible within the premium EV segment.
Product expansion could also make a major difference. A single-model strategy naturally limits the number of customers Tesla can target. More body styles, price points or seating configurations could potentially expand the company's market reach.
Charging infrastructure will also influence purchase decisions, especially for customers who regularly travel between cities.
Finally, service and ownership support will be important as the number of Tesla vehicles on Indian roads increases.
Tesla's first year in India was relatively slow, with the company operating with a premium positioning, imported vehicles and a limited physical presence.
However, the sales numbers recorded in recent months suggest that the company is beginning to build momentum.
The crossing of 1,000 cumulative sales is therefore less important as an absolute volume figure and more significant as an indication of Tesla's progress in establishing its presence in India's premium EV market.
September's record of 291 units provides Tesla with a stronger monthly sales base going forward. Whether the company can consistently maintain or exceed this level will determine whether the 1,000-unit milestone becomes the beginning of sustained growth or remains an early achievement for a niche premium EV brand.
For now, the Model Y remains the centre of Tesla's India strategy, and the sharp improvement in sales shows that there is a growing group of Indian buyers willing to consider the brand despite its premium pricing and relatively limited product portfolio.
