Renault cars is preparing to expand the new Duster range in India with a strong-hybrid powertrain, with the hybrid version scheduled for its October 17 debut. The new E-Tech system is expected to give the Duster a more efficient alternative for buyers looking beyond conventional petrol SUVs.

The new-generation Renault Duster has already returned to the Indian market with petrol engines, and the upcoming hybrid version will add another major powertrain choice to the SUV's line-up. Renault's official India website lists the strong-hybrid E-Tech 160 as the third engine option for the Duster, alongside the TCe 100 and TCe 160 petrol engines.

October 17 Launch for Duster Hybrid

The Duster strong hybrid is set to make its India debut on October 17, 2026, according to current industry reports. It will become the latest addition to Renault India's Duster range and is expected to strengthen the SUV's position in the competitive mid-size SUV segment.

Renault has already confirmed that the strong-hybrid E-Tech powertrain will be available in India around Diwali 2026. The company's official website describes the system as a 1.8-litre petrol hybrid with a 1.4kWh battery and two electric motors.

1.8-Litre Petrol Engine With Two Electric Motors

The upcoming Duster Hybrid uses a naturally aspirated 1.8-litre petrol engine combined with two electric motors. One electric motor works primarily as a generator, while the second motor drives the wheels.

The system is expected to produce a combined 160hp and 172Nm. Power is sent through an 8-speed DHT automatic transmission, according to Renault's current India specifications.

This setup is different from the hybrid systems used by several Toyota-based SUVs. Renault's E-Tech technology combines engine power, electric drive and regenerative braking through its multi-mode hybrid transmission.

Hybrid Power Could Fill the Diesel Gap

One of the biggest talking points around the new Duster is the absence of a diesel engine. Unlike the previous-generation Duster, the new model does not bring back a diesel option for India.

The strong hybrid therefore gives Renault another way to address buyers looking for better efficiency without moving completely to an EV. The system can use electric drive at lower speeds and recover energy through regenerative braking.

The Duster Hybrid will enter a segment where strong-hybrid technology is already available on models such as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
