Hyundai Offers Up to 15% Insurance Savings to Safe Drivers with Bluelink

Hyundai Motor India has introduced a Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) programme for eligible Bluelink-connected car owners. The initiative could help responsible drivers save up to 15% on the own-damage portion of their insurance premium at renewal, based on their driving behaviour and the participating insurer's conditions.

Hyundai Motor India has introduced a new insurance benefit for customers who own vehicles equipped with its Bluelink connected-car technology. Under the new Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) programme, eligible customers can potentially receive additional benefits on their car insurance renewal by maintaining responsible driving habits.

The programme uses driving information collected through Hyundai's Bluelink platform to calculate an individual driving score. Participating insurance companies can consider this score when evaluating customers for insurance benefits.

Unlike traditional insurance offers that may be based primarily on vehicle and policy-related details, Hyundai's new initiative connects driving behaviour with potential financial savings. It is also designed to encourage safer driving practices among connected-car owners.

Hyundai UBI Programme: Up to 15% Insurance Savings

The biggest highlight of Hyundai's new initiative is the possibility of receiving up to 15% savings on the own-damage component of the motor insurance premium.

Customers with a driving score of 70 or above may qualify for insurance benefits. However, the final discount will depend on the underwriting policies, eligibility requirements and terms and conditions of the participating insurance company.

It is important to understand that the potential 15% saving does not apply automatically to the complete motor insurance premium. It specifically relates to the own-damage portion of the policy.

The actual benefit may vary between customers depending on their driving performance and the insurer's assessment.

How Hyundai's Usage-Based Insurance Programme Works

Hyundai's UBI programme uses information generated by vehicles through the existing Bluelink connected-car platform. The system evaluates driving behaviour over the preceding three months and generates a personalised driving score.

The score is based on several driving parameters, including:

  • Rapid acceleration: The system evaluates sudden acceleration patterns.

  • Rapid deceleration: Frequent sudden reductions in speed are considered.

  • Braking behaviour: Rapid or harsh braking patterns are assessed.

  • Speed control: Driving speed and related behaviour contribute to the evaluation.

  • Idling behaviour: Unnecessary engine idling is also considered.

These parameters help participating insurers understand driving patterns and assess whether customers may qualify for additional insurance benefits.

Since the programme uses existing Bluelink technology, eligible customers do not need to install an additional tracking device in their vehicles.

Customers Can Check Their Driving Score Through Bluelink

Hyundai customers can view their Usage-Based Insurance score through the Bluelink mobile application.

Owners whose insurance renewal is due within the next 90 days can check their driving scores and explore the potential benefits available through participating insurance companies.

A score of 70 or above may make a customer eligible for insurance benefits. However, achieving this score does not guarantee a particular discount because the final decision remains subject to the insurer's underwriting process.

Customers who receive a score below the indicative threshold can also access personalised driving tips through the application. These suggestions may help them improve their driving habits and potentially become eligible for benefits at a future renewal.

Another important point is that customers can choose whether to share their driving scores with participating insurance companies. The sharing process requires customer consent through the Bluelink application.

Three Insurance Companies to Participate in the Initial Phase

Hyundai India Insurance Broking (HIIB) will facilitate the new programme by acting as an intermediary between Hyundai Motor India and participating insurance companies.

The initial phase includes three insurance partners:

1. Cholamandalam MS General Insurance

Cholamandalam MS General Insurance is among the first participating insurers. It will consider eligible driving scores as part of its insurance assessment process.

2. Go Digit General Insurance

Go Digit General Insurance is another insurance partner included in Hyundai's initial UBI programme. Eligible customers can explore potential renewal benefits through the programme.

3. ICICI Lombard General Insurance

ICICI Lombard General Insurance will also participate in the initiative. Customers can choose to share their Bluelink driving scores with the insurer, subject to the applicable consent and underwriting requirements.

The final insurance premium and benefits will be determined by the participating insurer rather than automatically fixed by Hyundai.

No Additional Tracking Device Required

One of the convenient aspects of Hyundai's UBI programme is that customers do not need to purchase or install a separate tracking device.

The programme uses vehicle-generated information collected through the existing Bluelink connected-car system. This makes it easier for eligible owners to explore the insurance benefits without adding another hardware component to their vehicles.

Hyundai's Bluelink technology already provides several connected-car features related to vehicle information, convenience, safety and security. The new insurance initiative expands its role by connecting driving behaviour with potential ownership-cost benefits.

However, the programme is limited to eligible Bluelink-connected vehicles and remains subject to the applicable insurance conditions.

Hyundai Expands Its Bluelink Connected-Car Ecosystem

The new insurance programme is also part of Hyundai's wider strategy to increase the usefulness of connected-car technology in India.

According to Hyundai Motor India's Managing Director and CEO, Tarun Garg, the company already has more than 0.8 million connected cars on Indian roads.

Hyundai is targeting one million cumulative connected-car sales by 2027 and aims to reach two million by 2030 through its Bluelink platform.

The introduction of Usage-Based Insurance adds another customer-focused service to this growing ecosystem. Instead of using connected-car technology only for convenience and vehicle monitoring, Hyundai is now connecting it with potential financial benefits.

The programme could also encourage customers to pay greater attention to their driving habits, particularly acceleration, braking, speed management and unnecessary idling.

What Hyundai Owners Should Know Before Applying

Although the programme offers an opportunity to reduce insurance costs, customers should understand a few important conditions before participating.

First, the vehicle must be eligible for the programme and equipped with the required Bluelink connectivity.

Second, customers should check their driving scores through the Bluelink application, particularly if their insurance renewal is approaching within the next 90 days.

Third, sharing the score with an insurer is optional and requires customer consent.

Finally, customers should compare the complete insurance quotation rather than focusing only on the advertised saving. The own-damage premium, third-party premium, insured declared value (IDV), deductibles, add-on covers and policy conditions should all be considered before renewing.

A score of 70 or above may help customers qualify for benefits, but it does not guarantee the maximum 15% saving.
