Hyundai Motor India has introduced a new Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) programme for eligible customers with Bluelink-connected vehicles. The initiative aims to reward responsible driving by offering potential savings of up to 15% on the own-damage component of motor insurance premiums at the time of renewal.
The new programme connects driving behaviour with insurance benefits. Instead of relying only on conventional insurance pricing factors, participating insurers can consider a customer's driving score when assessing eligibility for additional benefits.
The programme will use vehicle-generated information collected through Hyundai's Bluelink connected-car platform. Customers do not need to install any additional tracking device to participate. The driving assessment will cover the previous three months, and eligible customers can check their scores through the Bluelink mobile application.
Hyundai's UBI programme evaluates driving patterns recorded through the Bluelink platform. The system analyses different aspects of driving behaviour and generates a score that participating insurance companies can use during their underwriting process.
The assessment focuses on driving habits that can influence road safety and vehicle control. These include rapid acceleration, sudden deceleration, braking behaviour, speed control and engine idling.
Customers with an insurance renewal due within the next 90 days can check their UBI score through the Bluelink app. Those who receive a score of 70 or above may become eligible for insurance benefits, subject to the terms and underwriting policies of the participating insurer.
Importantly, sharing the driving score with insurance companies is optional. Customers can choose to share their information through the Bluelink app after providing their consent.
One of the biggest highlights of Hyundai's new programme is the possibility of receiving up to 15% savings on the own-damage portion of the insurance premium.
The benefit is designed to encourage safer driving by offering a potential financial reward to customers who maintain responsible driving habits.
However, the 15% saving does not automatically apply to the entire motor insurance premium. It relates specifically to the own-damage component, and the final benefit will depend on the participating insurer's underwriting assessment, eligibility requirements and policy conditions.
Customers should also remember that a driving score of 70 or above only makes them potentially eligible. It does not guarantee a particular discount.

Hyundai India Insurance Broking (HIIB) will facilitate the programme by acting as an intermediary between Hyundai Motor India and participating insurance companies.
The first phase includes three insurance partners:
Cholamandalam MS General Insurance: One of the participating insurers that can consider eligible driving scores during its insurance assessment.
Go Digit General Insurance: Another insurance partner included in the programme's initial phase.
ICICI Lombard General Insurance: The third participating insurer that will use the programme's driving-score information as part of its assessment.
The participating insurers will determine the applicable benefits according to their individual underwriting policies and terms.
The UBI programme evaluates several driving parameters collected through the vehicle's connected-car system. These factors are intended to provide an understanding of how consistently and responsibly a customer drives.
Rapid acceleration: Frequent sudden acceleration can indicate aggressive driving behaviour. The system considers acceleration patterns when generating the driving score.
Braking and deceleration: Sudden braking and harsh deceleration are also included in the assessment. Smooth braking can help improve driving comfort and reduce unnecessary stress during regular journeys.
Speed control: Maintaining appropriate speed and avoiding aggressive driving patterns are important aspects of safer road behaviour.
Idling behaviour: The programme also considers how the vehicle is used while the engine is running without the car moving.
By analysing these parameters over three months, Hyundai's system generates a driving score that can be viewed through the Bluelink app.
Another important aspect of Hyundai's programme is that customers do not need to purchase or install a separate tracking device.
The driving information will be collected through the existing Bluelink connected-car platform. This makes the programme more convenient for eligible owners who already have compatible connected-car technology.
Hyundai's Bluelink platform provides connected features related to vehicle information, safety, security and convenience. The new insurance initiative extends the use of this technology into vehicle ownership costs.
However, eligibility will depend on the vehicle's Bluelink connectivity, the customer's insurance renewal timeline and the programme's applicable conditions.
Hyundai's new insurance initiative is also part of its broader strategy to expand the use of connected-car technology in India.
According to Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO Tarun Garg, the company has more than 0.8 million connected cars on Indian roads. Hyundai is targeting one million cumulative connected-car sales by 2027 and two million by 2030 through its Bluelink platform.
The UBI programme gives the company another way to use connected-car information beyond traditional convenience and vehicle-monitoring functions.
By connecting driving behaviour with potential insurance benefits, Hyundai is attempting to create additional value for customers who already use its connected-car services.
Customers with eligible Bluelink-connected Hyundai vehicles and insurance renewals due within the next 90 days can begin by checking their driving score in the Bluelink application.
They can then review their score and choose whether to share it with participating insurers. Customers should check the available insurance options, eligibility conditions and final premium calculations before renewing their policies.
Since the benefit is subject to insurer approval, owners should not assume that every customer with a score of 70 or above will receive the maximum 15% saving.
