Mahindra cars new XUV 3XO ZNG, the CNG version of its popular compact SUV, has brought an important safety question into focus. The company says the model is built on the existing XUV 3XO platform, which has secured a five-star Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) rating for adult and child occupant protection. However, the CNG version has not yet received a separately published Bharat NCAP crash-test result.
The clarification is important for buyers because a vehicle sharing its platform and body structure with a five-star-rated model does not automatically mean every powertrain version has been independently crash-tested and awarded the same rating.
Mahindra launched the XUV 3XO ZNG in India on October 15, 2026, with a starting price of Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The SUV cars combines a turbocharged petrol-CNG powertrain with standard safety equipment, including six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and ISOFIX child-seat mounts.
The standard Mahindra XUV 3XO has a five-star Bharat NCAP rating for both adult and child occupant protection. It scored 29.36 out of 32 points for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 43 out of 49 points for Child Occupant Protection (COP).
The official Bharat NCAP record identifies the tested vehicle as the XUV 3XO, with the AX7L and MX2 variants listed in the original assessment. Its applicability information covers specified petrol and diesel variants.
The CNG-powered XUV 3XO ZNG is not separately listed as a crash-tested CNG variant in the published rating information.
Mahindra's own launch announcement says the ZNG is built on the existing XUV 3XO, which has secured a five-star Bharat NCAP rating. The company also describes the CNG model as engineered for a five-star rating.
Therefore, the accurate interpretation is that the CNG model is based on a vehicle with a five-star rating, but buyers should not treat this as a separately awarded five-star BNCAP result for the ZNG.
Although a separate CNG crash-test rating has not been published, Mahindra has equipped the XUV 3XO ZNG with several standard safety features.
The company offers six airbags across the CNG range, along with Electronic Stability Control and ISOFIX child-seat mounts. These features are intended to improve occupant protection and vehicle stability.
The CNG system also receives integrated gas-leak detection. If the system detects a gas leak, it can automatically switch the engine to petrol mode.
This is an important feature for a factory-fitted CNG vehicle because it adds an additional layer of protection during operation.
Key safety equipment includes:
Six airbags as standard
Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
ISOFIX child-seat mounts
Integrated CNG gas-leak detection
Automatic changeover to petrol mode if a gas leak is detected
Other standard vehicle safety equipment
The XUV 3XO ZNG uses a 1.2-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol engine with a factory-fitted CNG system. One of its major highlights is that Mahindra claims the same power and torque output in both petrol and CNG modes.
The engine produces 82 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque. Mahindra claims that the SUV delivers 24.7 km/kg of certified fuel efficiency in CNG mode.
The powertrain is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. The company has also highlighted its 10-bar CNG injection pressure system, developed to deliver responsive performance.
This setup makes the XUV 3XO ZNG different from many conventional CNG passenger vehicles that use naturally aspirated engines and offer lower performance figures.
Another important feature of the XUV 3XO ZNG is its twin-cylinder CNG arrangement.
Instead of using a conventional large cylinder that occupies a significant portion of the luggage compartment, Mahindra has packaged the CNG cylinders underneath the boot floor.
This arrangement helps maintain a flat luggage-loading floor and provides more practical boot space compared with some traditional CNG installations.
The layout is particularly useful for customers who want the running-cost benefits of CNG without giving up too much everyday luggage practicality.

Crash-test ratings are an important part of a vehicle's safety credentials. However, buyers should always check which specific model and variants are covered by an official assessment.
Different powertrain configurations can involve changes to vehicle weight, fuel-system packaging and structural components. A factory-fitted CNG system also introduces additional components that need to be considered when evaluating the vehicle's safety.
The XUV 3XO ZNG benefits from being developed on the existing XUV 3XO platform, and Mahindra has included dedicated CNG safety measures. Nevertheless, an official separate crash-test result would provide clearer confirmation of its performance under Bharat NCAP's assessment.
Until such a result is published, it is more accurate to describe the ZNG as based on the five-star-rated XUV 3XO rather than claim that the CNG version has independently received five stars.
The Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG combines turbocharged performance, CNG efficiency and a useful list of standard safety equipment. Its six airbags, ESC, ISOFIX mounts and gas-leak detection system are important features for buyers considering a CNG-powered SUV.
The regular XUV 3XO has earned five stars in Bharat NCAP testing for adult and child occupant protection. However, the CNG ZNG version does not yet have a separately published five-star Bharat NCAP result.
Buyers should therefore distinguish between the rating of the existing XUV 3XO variants and the safety claims made for the new CNG version. An official rating update covering the ZNG would provide the clearest answer.
