BMW Motorrad appears to be preparing another addition to its high-performance M motorcycle family for 2027. Regulatory documents submitted in the US have revealed the name BMW M 1000 RS, indicating that the company could be developing a new sport-touring motorcycle based on the M 1000 RR platform.
The model has been independently listed in emissions certification documents from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Both records identify the motorcycle as a 2027 BMW M 1000 RS, adding credibility to reports that the new model is under development.
The M 1000 RS is expected to use BMW's existing 999cc inline-four-cylinder engine. The motorcycle appears alongside the M 1000 RR in both certification records, suggesting that the two models could share the same basic powertrain.
The certification information for the 2027 M 1000 RR indicates an output of approximately 205hp at 13,000rpm and 113Nm of torque. While the final specifications of the M 1000 RS have not been officially announced, the shared certification could indicate similar engine hardware.
However, the RS is expected to differ substantially from the RR in terms of purpose and riding character.
BMW's RS badge traditionally represents the company's Reise und Sport, or "Travel and Sport", philosophy. The designation has been used on motorcycles such as the R 1300 RS, which combines performance with greater comfort and long-distance usability.
If the M 1000 RS arrives as expected, it would become the first RS motorcycle from BMW to combine this sport-touring philosophy with an inline-four engine.
Compared with the track-focused M 1000 RR, the RS could feature a more practical riding position, improved wind protection and ergonomics suited to longer journeys while retaining the performance expected from BMW's M division.
BMW Motorrad currently offers three M-branded motorcycles globally: the M 1000 RR, M 1000 XR and M 1000 R. The M 1000 R has also been introduced in India, where it is priced at ₹33.50 lakh.
The company appears to be preparing several other high-performance motorcycles as well. Spy images have recently suggested that BMW is developing an M 1300 GS, which could become another major addition to the M range.
BMW is also working on the next-generation S 1000 RR, with a design patent for the motorcycle recently filed in India.
With the M 1000 RS already appearing in emissions certification documents for the 2027 model year, BMW could be preparing for an official unveiling in the near future.
An appearance at EICMA in November would be a logical opportunity for BMW to showcase the new motorcycle, although the company has yet to confirm its launch plans or specifications.
If introduced, the M 1000 RS could give BMW a new entry in the premium performance sport-touring category, combining the brand's M performance technology with greater everyday and long-distance usability.
