Renault cars India recorded strong year-on-year growth in July 2026, but the company’s latest sales performance was marked by a sharp decline in new Duster sales. Renault sold 3,293 vehicles in the domestic market in July 2026, compared with 2,575 units in the same month last year. This represents a 27.88% YoY increase.
However, Renault’s monthly performance was weaker compared with June 2026. The company had sold 4,063 units in June, meaning July sales declined by 18.95% month-on-month.
Despite the monthly decline, Renault continues to maintain positive sales growth during the year. Between April and July 2026, the automaker sold 16,882 units, up from 10,304 units during the same period in 2025. For January to July 2026, Renault recorded 29,138 units, compared with 18,606 units in the corresponding period last year.
The biggest concern for Renault is the sales performance of the latest-generation Duster. The SUV entered the Indian market with high expectations, especially because the Duster name has strong recognition among Indian SUV buyers.
However, monthly sales have declined consistently after an encouraging start. The Duster recorded 1,402 units in March, followed by 2,359 units in April. Sales then dropped to 1,267 units in May and 1,011 units in June.
In July 2026, Duster sales fell further to just 512 units, making it the SUV’s lowest monthly sales figure since its launch.
Renault has sold a total of 6,551 Duster units over the four-month period, resulting in an average monthly volume of around 1,310 units. The company also introduced the Duster Adventure Edition recently in an effort to strengthen the SUV’s appeal.
The Duster is operating in one of India's most competitive SUV segments, where several established models continue to record significantly higher volumes.
During January-July 2026, the Hyundai Creta led the segment with 1,09,479 units, followed by the Maruti Suzuki Victoris with 85,246 units. The Kia Seltos recorded 75,346 units, while the Toyota Hyryder registered 62,791 units.
Newer models have also managed to establish a stronger sales pace. The Tata Sierra has maintained an average of more than 7,100 units per month, while the Honda Elevate has also continued to sell ahead of the Duster.
July sales further highlighted the difference. Creta recorded 18,088 units, while Seltos, Victoris, Hyryder and Sierra registered 12,541 units, 11,334 units, 7,187 units and 6,327 units, respectively.
By comparison, the Duster’s 512-unit tally placed it close to the bottom of the segment.
Nissan Tekton Records Stronger July Performance
Another interesting development involves the Nissan Tekton, which is also manufactured at Renault-Nissan’s Chennai production facility.
The new Nissan SUV recorded 1,670 units in July 2026, considerably higher than the Duster's monthly tally. The Tekton has therefore made a stronger initial impact in the Indian market.
Since the Chennai facility handles production for both Renault and Nissan, including vehicles for domestic sales and exports, production allocation could potentially be one factor behind fluctuations in Duster availability. However, official confirmation regarding any production shift has not been provided.
For Renault, the overall sales growth remains encouraging, but the sharp fall in Duster volumes will be an area to watch in the coming months. The company will need to improve the SUV's monthly sales momentum as competition in India's mid-size SUV segment continues to intensify.
