Mahindra is preparing a new sub-4-metre SUV that could bring a more rugged and lifestyle-focused character to the compact SUV segment. Called the Vision S, the upcoming model is being developed on Mahindra's versatile NU_IQ platform and has been spotted testing at several locations ahead of its expected launch in 2027.
The latest test mule has been photographed in Kaza, Himachal Pradesh, where it was reportedly seen at a fuel station alongside a diesel pump. While this does not officially confirm the powertrain, the sighting has renewed speculation that Mahindra could offer the Vision S with a diesel engine.
The Vision S is expected to stand apart from conventional sub-4-metre SUVs with its tall, upright and boxy proportions. Its design appears to prioritise road presence while also maximising interior space.
At the front, the SUV features an upright fascia with Mahindra's signature slatted grille. Earlier test vehicles had revealed a centrally positioned radar sensor, suggesting that the Vision S could offer Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), potentially on higher variants.
The latest spy images also reveal a flat clamshell bonnet, top-mounted headlamps and a prominent bumper. Previous sightings have shown inverted L-shaped LED DRLs, along with an ice-cube-inspired treatment for the headlamps and fog lamps.
One of the Vision S's biggest design highlights could be its tall stance. When photographed alongside a Toyota Fortuner, the upcoming Mahindra SUV appeared only slightly shorter in terms of height. If the production model retains these proportions, it could become one of the tallest SUVs in the sub-4-metre category.
The upright design could also benefit cabin space by creating greater headroom and a more spacious interior. A short front and rear overhang should further help Mahindra maximise usable cabin volume.
The Vision S follows a clean, squared-off design theme along the sides. Straight lines define the doors and window panels, while the beltline and roofline run almost parallel to reinforce its boxy appearance.
Other styling elements include squared wheel arches, rectangular ORVMs and flush-fitting door handles.
At the rear, the SUV is expected to feature a tailgate-mounted spare wheel. This could give the Vision S a distinctive lifestyle-oriented character and separate it from many of the more urban-focused compact SUVs currently available in India.
Despite its rugged exterior design, Mahindra is expected to equip the Vision S with a premium and technology-focused cabin.
Earlier test vehicles have revealed a large TFT instrument cluster and a vertically oriented touchscreen infotainment display. The air-conditioning vents appear to use a vertical layout with a distinctive mirror-like design.
The dashboard control panel also appears to share design elements with Mahindra's larger SUVs, including the Thar Roxx and Scorpio-N.
For easier entry and exit, the Vision S is expected to feature A-pillar-mounted grab handles, adding to its practical and lifestyle-oriented character.

One particularly notable feature could be independent rear suspension. If offered on the production model, it could potentially make the Vision S one of the few, if not the first, sub-4-metre SUVs in India to offer this setup.
The latest Kaza sighting has brought attention to the possibility of a diesel-powered Vision S. The test vehicle was reportedly seen at a fuel station near a diesel dispenser, although Mahindra has not yet officially confirmed its engine lineup.
The Vision S could initially be offered with petrol and diesel powertrain options. Since the NU_IQ platform has been engineered to support multiple powertrain technologies, Mahindra could potentially introduce additional versions in the future.
The platform is understood to be capable of accommodating electric, hybrid and flex-fuel powertrains, opening the possibility of more variants as market requirements evolve.
The Vision S is expected to make its production debut in 2027. Mahindra appears to be positioning the SUV as a relatively accessible yet rugged alternative in the highly competitive sub-4-metre SUV segment.
With its tall stance, boxy styling, potential diesel engine, premium equipment and lifestyle-focused design, the Vision S could offer a distinctive proposition for buyers looking beyond conventional urban compact SUVs.
However, Mahindra is yet to reveal the final specifications, pricing and official powertrain details. More information is expected to emerge as testing progresses closer to the SUV's anticipated 2027 launch
