Volkswagen’s Upcoming Sub-4m SUV: What We Know So Far

India’s sub-4-metre SUV market has become one of the most important growth areas in the passenger vehicle industry, attracting nearly 1.1 lakh sales every month. Volkswagen now plans to strengthen its presence in this highly competitive category with a new compact SUV developed specifically for the Indian market.

The German automaker has officially confirmed plans to introduce a sub-4-metre SUV as part of its broader India strategy. The upcoming model is expected to be closely related to the Skoda Kylaq, allowing Volkswagen to leverage an existing platform while giving the new SUV its own design, features and brand identity.

Volkswagen’s New Compact SUV to Share Kylaq Foundations

The upcoming Volkswagen SUV is expected to be a badge-engineered sibling of the Skoda Kylaq. The Kylaq has already established itself as one of the stronger performers in the sub-4-metre SUV category and regularly features among India’s top-selling models in this segment.

The Kylaq has also become an important product for Skoda, accounting for a significant portion of the brand's monthly sales. However, Volkswagen is expected to differentiate its version through unique exterior styling, cabin design, equipment and positioning.

Volkswagen has previously competed in the compact-car space in India with models such as the Polo and Ameo. The company also sells the Tera SUV in Brazil, which shares its underlying architecture with the Kylaq and provides an indication of how Volkswagen can adapt the platform for its own product.

₹275 Crore Investment Planned

The upcoming Volkswagen SUV is reportedly backed by an investment of around €25 million, equivalent to approximately ₹275 crore. Since much of the engineering and platform work can be shared with the Kylaq, Volkswagen may be able to bring the new model to market relatively quickly.

However, the company has not yet announced an official launch date. With several manufacturers preparing new products for this category, competition in India's compact SUV market is expected to become even tougher.

The segment already accounts for around 30% of overall passenger vehicle sales, while its contribution to utility vehicle sales is estimated to be above 50%.

Competition Set to Intensify

Volkswagen's upcoming SUV will enter an increasingly crowded market. Key players currently include the Tata Punch, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Kia Sonet, Hyundai Exter, Skoda Kylaq and Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor.

The segment is also expected to see several new entrants in the coming years, including upcoming products from VinFast, Mahindra, Hyundai, Honda and Renault.

Same 1.0-Litre TSI Engine Expected

Under the bonnet, Volkswagen's compact SUV is expected to use the familiar 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine. In the Kylaq, this engine produces 116 PS of maximum power and 178 Nm of peak torque.

The Kylaq currently offers a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission. However, Volkswagen's upcoming SUV is expected to introduce an 8-speed automatic gearbox, which is also reportedly planned for the Kylaq as part of a future update.

Feature-Rich Cabin

The new Volkswagen SUV is expected to share several components and technologies with the Kylaq while receiving Volkswagen-specific design elements.

The Kylaq comes equipped with features such as a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 8-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, electric sunroof, wireless smartphone charging and automatic climate control.

Higher variants also offer front ventilated seats and electrically adjustable front seats. Volkswagen is expected to carry forward many of these convenience and premium features in its own compact SUV.

Strong Focus on Safety

Safety is likely to remain another major highlight. The Skoda Kylaq has achieved a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating, making it one of the strongest-rated models in its class.

Its safety package includes six airbags, Electronic Stability Control, Hill Hold Control, cruise control and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Other technologies include multi-collision braking, electronic differential lock and rollover protection.

Volkswagen's version is expected to offer a broadly similar safety package, although the final equipment list will be confirmed closer to its launch.

What to Expect

Volkswagen's new sub-4-metre SUV could give the brand a much stronger presence in one of India's fastest-growing vehicle categories. By combining the Kylaq's proven platform and powertrain with Volkswagen's styling and brand identity, the new model could become an important volume driver for the company.

With the project already approved and investment committed, more details about the name, design, features, pricing and launch timeline are expected to emerge in the coming months.
