Porsche is giving owners of some of its older sports cars a new way to add modern technology without changing the original character of their vehicles. The company has expanded its Porsche Classic Communication Management Plus (PCCM Plus) retrofit system to a wider range of 911, Boxster and Cayman models from 2009 to 2016.
The new system combines a period-inspired design with features such as wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and over-the-air map updates.
Porsche says the latest PCCM Plus generation is designed to integrate with the existing vehicle architecture rather than looking like a conventional aftermarket infotainment installation. The expanded programme covers more than 300,000 future-classic Porsche vehicles globally.
The latest PCCM Plus system is available for several generations of the 911, Boxster and Cayman.
The compatible models include:
Porsche 911 Type 997.2
Porsche 911 Type 991.1
Porsche Boxster Type 987.2
Porsche Cayman Type 987.2
Porsche Boxster Type 981
Porsche Cayman Type 981
Porsche is offering two model-specific versions of the new system. One covers vehicles from 2009 to 2013, while the other is designed for models from 2012 to 2016. Exact functionality can vary depending on the vehicle's equipment and specification.
At the centre of the upgrade is a 7-inch high-resolution touchscreen.
Rather than introducing a large modern tablet-style display, Porsche has designed PCCM Plus to blend with the interiors of its older models. The system includes physical controls and is intended to retain the visual character of the original dashboard.
Owners can also operate supported functions through the multifunction steering wheel, where equipped.
This approach is particularly relevant for owners who want modern connectivity without making the cabin of an older Porsche look heavily modified.
One of the biggest upgrades is smartphone connectivity.
The new PCCM Plus supports wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, allowing compatible smartphones to connect without requiring a cable for everyday use.
The system also supports Bluetooth audio streaming and can display information such as song titles and artist names.
Connectivity options also include Wi-Fi and a nano-SIM slot with 4G support for supported functions.
Porsche has also added features designed specifically for driving enthusiasts.
The navigation system can use satellite imagery, while the new Scenic Roads function is designed to suggest winding and panoramic routes rather than simply prioritising the quickest route.
For a sports car such as the 911, Boxster or Cayman, this feature gives the navigation system a more enthusiast-oriented purpose.
Instead of simply asking the system to find the shortest route, drivers can use it to discover more interesting roads.
The PCCM Plus system is not limited to the centre touchscreen.
On compatible vehicles, information such as navigation directions and music details can also be displayed in the instrument cluster.
This allows the driver to access important information without relying entirely on the central infotainment screen.
The system also retains access to certain existing vehicle functions, helping the retrofit feel more integrated with the original car.
The new system can also improve the way parking assistance information is presented.
On compatible Boxster and Cayman models equipped with parking sensors, the PCCM Plus system can supplement the existing acoustic warnings with a visual display showing the distance to nearby obstacles.
This brings a more modern interface to a feature that originally relied primarily on audible alerts.
Porsche has added several vehicle-focused functions to the new system.
Depending on the model and specification, drivers can view information such as oil temperature and oil pressure through the trip-screen interface.
Speed-limit information can also be displayed using navigation map data.
These additions keep the system focused on the driving experience rather than simply adding smartphone connectivity.
The new PCCM Plus also supports over-the-air map updates.
This means navigation data can be updated without requiring the traditional process of manually installing new map data.
Certain online functions require an active internet connection, and feature availability can differ depending on the vehicle, equipment and country.
Another small but interesting detail is the ability to select the exterior colour of the virtual vehicle displayed on the screen.
This allows owners to make the digital representation closer to the appearance of their actual Porsche.
It is a relatively small feature, but it supports Porsche's aim of making the retrofit feel like part of the original car rather than a generic aftermarket accessory.
PCCM Plus is not a completely new idea for Porsche.
The company has offered retrofit infotainment systems for older classic models for several years. The latest expansion brings the technology to newer generations that are increasingly being viewed as future classics.
Porsche's existing programme also covers older 911, Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne models, while the new generation extends compatibility to the 997.2, 991.1, 987.2 and 981 generations.

The latest PCCM Plus upgrade gives owners of older Porsche sports cars a way to modernise one of the areas that tends to age fastest: infotainment.
The cars themselves may still offer the driving character that made their respective generations popular, but their original multimedia systems can feel dated compared with today's smartphones and connected-car technology.
Porsche's approach is therefore relatively simple: keep the classic cabin appearance while adding the connectivity and navigation features expected from a modern car.
For owners of compatible 911, Boxster and Cayman models, the retrofit brings wireless smartphone connectivity, updated navigation and additional vehicle information while keeping the system visually integrated with the original interior.
