Volvo car has revealed updated versions of its compact XC40, EX40 and EC40 models, bringing changes to their exterior design, cabin technology and safety equipment. The latest update gives the compact Volvo SUVs a fresher appearance while adding more advanced driver-assistance and connectivity features.
The update is particularly relevant for India as Volvo currently offers the EX40 and EC40 electric models in the country. However, Volvo has not yet announced a specific India launch date or confirmed the exact specifications of the updated models for the Indian market.
The updated models receive several styling changes at the front and rear. The refreshed design includes revised LED lighting, redesigned bumpers, an updated bonnet and new wheel designs.
The lighting signature continues Volvo's familiar Thor's Hammer-inspired theme, while the revised front-end treatment gives the SUVs a more modern appearance.
At the rear, the updated LED elements further differentiate the refreshed models from their earlier versions.
One of the biggest changes inside the updated models is the larger 11.2-inch central touchscreen.
The new display is designed to provide a more modern user experience, with improved access to navigation, entertainment and connected functions. Volvo has also introduced Google's Gemini AI assistant, which can support voice-based functions such as navigation, route planning and messaging.
This technology upgrade is aimed at making the cabin more connected and easier to operate while driving.
Safety remains a major focus of the update. Volvo has added more sensors and upgraded the vehicle's driver-assistance technology.
The updated sensor package includes additional radar sensors, an improved front camera and more ultrasonic sensors. These upgrades help support functions such as collision avoidance, emergency braking, lane assistance and improved parking assistance.
The 360-degree camera system has also been enhanced with a 3D view, giving the driver a clearer view around the vehicle during parking and low-speed manoeuvres.
Other assistance functions include improved lane-following support, lane-change assistance and alerts designed to warn occupants before opening a door into the path of approaching road users.
The refreshed XC40 continues with a mild-hybrid powertrain in the markets where the updated model has been announced.
The available petrol engine options include outputs of around 163 hp and 197 hp. The focus remains on providing a balance between everyday performance, efficiency and practicality.
The XC40 continues to target buyers looking for a compact premium SUV with a conventional powertrain supported by mild-hybrid technology.
The EX40 remains the fully electric member of the compact SUV family in markets where it continues to be offered.
The updated EX40 is available with different power outputs, including rear-wheel-drive versions and a higher-performance all-wheel-drive variant. The performance version is reported to produce up to 442 hp.
The latest changes are aimed at improving the overall technology and safety package rather than completely changing the character of the electric SUV.
The EC40 retains its distinctive coupe-inspired crossover design and fully electric powertrain.
Volvo currently lists the EC40 in India as a fully electric crossover. The India-specification model is listed with an estimated range of up to 551 km and a Twin Motor setup producing up to 408 hp. Volvo also states that the EC40 can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in around 28 minutes using a 200kW DC fast charger.
The current India-listed EC40 is priced from ₹59 lakh, although pricing and specifications for any updated version could be different.
The latest Volvo update is important for the Indian market because the brand already has the EX40 and EC40 in its India portfolio.
However, the latest reveal should not be considered an India launch announcement. Volvo has not yet confirmed when the refreshed models will arrive in India or whether Indian versions will receive exactly the same specifications and equipment as international-market models.
For Indian buyers, the major expected attractions of the update include the sharper exterior styling, larger infotainment display, enhanced safety technology and improved connected features.
