BMW car has officially unveiled the eighth-generation 3 Series, bringing its iconic sports sedan into a new design and technology era. Codenamed G50, the new-generation model combines BMW's latest Neue Klasse-inspired styling with petrol powertrains featuring 48V mild-hybrid technology.

The new 3 Series is expected to enter global markets from early 2027, while an India launch is considered likely. However, BMW has not yet announced an official India launch date,India-specific variants or pricing.

A Major Design Change for the 3 Series

The eighth-generation BMW 3 Series marks a significant styling departure from the outgoing G20-generation sedan.

The new model gets a cleaner front-end design inspired by BMW's latest Neue Klasse family. The front features a wide visual panel incorporating the kidney-grille treatment,headlights and sensor hardware. The lighting signature has also been redesigned,while the bonnet and shoulder lines give the sedan a more muscular stance.

BMW has also added flush-fitting door handles that automatically extend when the driver approaches the car.

Despite the futuristic changes,the new 3 Series retains the classic long-bonnet,short-overhang and rear-drive-oriented sports-sedan proportions associated with the nameplate.

Larger Than the Current 3 Series

The G50 is slightly larger than the outgoing model.

The longer body and wheelbase are intended to retain the 3 Series' sporty proportions while providing additional space and stability.

New Interior Is the Biggest Talking Point

Inside,the new BMW 3 Series moves much closer to the technology seen in BMW's latest electric models.

The dashboard features BMW's Panoramic iDrive system,including a large 17.9-inch central touchscreen and BMW Panoramic Vision,which projects information across the lower section of the windscreen.

The system runs BMW Operating System X and supports connected services,voice interaction,wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. BMW has also integrated AI-powered voice functionality through its Intelligent Personal Assistant and Amazon Alexa+ technology.

A panoramic glass roof is standard,while features such as ventilated front seats,three-zone climate control,heated rear seats and Harman Kardon audio are available depending on specification.

Petrol Engines Get 48V Mild-Hybrid Technology

BMW has confirmed four- and six-cylinder petrol engines for the new 3 Series range,with 48V mild-hybrid technology used across the combustion-engine lineup.

For the global reveal,BMW has announced the 330,330 xDrive and M350 xDrive.

The 330 uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing 255hp,while the M350 xDrive gets a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six producing 437hp and 580Nm in BMW's US specification. The M350 sends power through an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive.

The M350 xDrive can accelerate from 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds,while other market specifications report a 0-100kph time of around 4.1 seconds.

M350 xDrive Replaces the M340i

One of the biggest changes is the arrival of the M350 xDrive,which replaces the M340i xDrive in the performance-oriented position below the full M3.

The new M Performance sedan gets an inline-six engine,all-wheel drive,M-specific suspension and an aggressive exterior treatment. It also introduces a new Drift Moment function that can temporarily direct power to the rear wheels for a more rear-biased driving experience.

A plug-in hybrid version is also planned for the new-generation 3 Series,but BMW has not yet released its complete technical specifications.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The new 3 Series also receives BMW's latest driver-assistance technology.

Depending on market and specification,the sedan can be equipped with advanced Level 2 driver-assistance functions,highway assistance,automatic emergency braking,lane-keeping assistance,evasive steering assistance and improved parking functions.

BMW says the new generation brings upgraded driver-assistance technology while keeping the driver involved rather than attempting to completely replace the driver's role.

Will the New BMW 3 Series Come to India?

This is the key question for Indian buyers.

BMW currently sells the 3 Series Gran Limousine in India,with production taking place at BMW Group's Chennai plant. The existing India model offers a longer-wheelbase format aimed at customers looking for additional rear-seat space.

The new G50 3 Series is expected to reach global markets from early 2027,and Autocar India reports that an India launch is likely. BMW,however,has not yet confirmed the Indian launch date,variant lineup or pricing.

What Could It Mean for Indian Buyers?

If BMW brings the new-generation 3 Series to India,it could become an important update for the brand's luxury sedan range.

The new design,Panoramic iDrive technology,48V mild-hybrid petrol engines and stronger M Performance model give the G50 a significantly different character from the current-generation car.

For India,the biggest question will be whether BMW introduces the standard-wheelbase G50,continues with a Gran Limousine strategy,or offers both formats.
