Mahindra Explores Multiple Electrified Powertrains

Mahindra is expanding its focus beyond conventional petrol, diesel and pure-electric powertrains as it evaluates additional electrification technologies for its future SUV portfolio. The company is understood to be working on a hybrid powertrain for the XUV 7XO, while a range-extender electric vehicle (EREV) setup is being explored for the XEV 9e.

At the same time, expectations around a hybrid version of the upcoming Scorpio Lifestyler pickup remain speculative. Mahindra has not confirmed a hybrid or fully electric version of the pickup at this stage. The Lifestyler is scheduled to enter the market by April 2027, according to Mahindra's official announcement.

Scorpio Lifestyler Hybrid Still Not Confirmed

The Scorpio Lifestyler is Mahindra's new global pickup, positioned for international markets alongside the company's SUV portfolio. The pickup is expected to use conventional internal-combustion engines initially, with a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol powertrain strategy expected depending on the market.

Mahindra's Head of International Operations, Sachin Arolkar, indicated that a pure-electric powertrain is not currently being pursued for the pickup segment. When asked about a hybrid Lifestyler, the company did not provide confirmation, leaving the possibility open but without any announced production timeline.

This approach could allow Mahindra to assess demand for electrified pickups before committing significant resources to a hybrid or EV version.

XUV 7XO Hybrid Could Strengthen Mahindra's SUV Line-Up

The XUV 7XO is already part of Mahindra's latest SUV portfolio. The model was launched in India in January 2026, with petrol and diesel powertrains and a strong emphasis on technology and premium features.

A hybrid version would give Mahindra another powertrain option between conventional ICE vehicles and fully electric SUVs. Strong-hybrid technology could be particularly relevant for customers who want improved fuel efficiency without depending entirely on charging infrastructure.

Mahindra has been evaluating multiple electrified technologies as the Indian market develops at different rates across segments. A hybrid XUV 7XO could therefore help the company address buyers who are not yet ready to switch to a full EV.

XEV 9e EREV Technology Under Consideration

The XEV 9e could take a different approach to electrification. Mahindra is reportedly working on a range-extender electric vehicle (EREV) configuration for the SUV.

In an EREV system, the vehicle primarily operates using an electric motor, while an internal-combustion engine can act as a generator to produce electricity when required. Unlike a conventional hybrid, the engine's primary role is not necessarily to drive the wheels directly.

This technology could provide an EV-like driving experience while reducing concerns about charging availability during longer journeys. For customers who frequently travel between cities, an EREV could offer a potential middle ground between a battery-electric SUV and a conventional hybrid.

Mahindra's Broader Electrification Plan

Mahindra's current portfolio already includes electric-origin SUVs such as the XEV 9e, XEV 9S and BE 6. The company has also continued expanding its EV ecosystem, including the introduction of Battery-as-a-Service across its electric-origin SUV range in August 2026.

The development of hybrid and range-extender technologies indicates that Mahindra is looking at a multi-powertrain strategy rather than relying exclusively on pure EVs.

What to Expect Next

For now, the XUV 7XO hybrid and XEV 9e EREV remain developments to watch, with final specifications, launch timelines and pricing yet to be announced. The Scorpio Lifestyler hybrid, meanwhile, should not be considered confirmed until Mahindra makes an official announcement.

The company's approach suggests that future Mahindra SUVs could offer customers a wider choice of petrol, diesel, strong-hybrid, EREV and pure-electric powertrains, depending on the segment and market requirements.
