SUVs may dominate India's new-car market, but premium hatchbacks continue to make sense for buyers who want a compact car that is easy to drive, reasonably spacious and economical to run.
The Toyota Glanza is one such hatchback. It combines a relatively compact footprint with a five-seat cabin, multiple powertrain choices, modern features and a practical urban-friendly design.
For buyers who primarily drive in cities, the Glanza's combination of size, efficiency and convenience can make more sense than moving into a larger SUV simply for the higher seating position.
So, what makes the Toyota Glanza a practical choice even as SUV demand continues to grow?
The Glanza measures 3,990mm in length, 1,745mm in width and 1,500mm in height, with a 2,520mm wheelbase.
These dimensions give the hatchback a relatively compact footprint for Indian urban conditions. Narrow roads, crowded markets and tight parking spaces can be easier to negotiate with a hatchback than with a larger SUV.
The Glanza also has a 4.85-metre turning radius, which can be useful when making U-turns or manoeuvring through congested areas.
For someone who spends most of the week driving around a city, these characteristics can be more important than outright size.
Despite its compact exterior dimensions, the Glanza is designed to accommodate five occupants.
The 2,520mm wheelbase helps create useful cabin space, while Toyota's current model offers features such as rear AC vents, rear USB connectivity and adjustable rear headrests.
The rear bench also gets a 60:40 split-fold function, giving owners the option of expanding the luggage-carrying flexibility when required.
This is particularly useful for buyers who regularly alternate between carrying passengers and transporting larger items.
One of the biggest advantages of the Glanza is its hatchback body style.
Unlike a sedan, the large rear hatch provides easier access to the luggage compartment and makes it simpler to load taller or bulkier objects.
Toyota also equips the Glanza with a luggage-room shelf and luggage-room lamp, adding some useful everyday touches.
The hatchback format therefore works well for a variety of requirements, from weekly grocery shopping to airport luggage and weekend trips.
The Glanza is powered by a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.
In petrol form, Toyota quotes 66kW of maximum power and 113Nm of torque, with the engine offered with manual and AMT transmission choices.
Toyota claims fuel efficiency of 22.35km/l with the manual and 22.94km/l with the AMT under certified test conditions.
For buyers who prioritise running costs, the Glanza is also available with an E-CNG powertrain.
The CNG version produces 57kW and 98.5Nm, while Toyota quotes a certified efficiency figure of 30.61km/kg.
The CNG variants are offered with a manual transmission.
This gives buyers the option of choosing between a conventional petrol setup and a CNG-focused configuration depending on their driving requirements.
The Glanza's AMT option is another reason it can work well as a city car.
Heavy traffic can make frequent clutch operation tiring, particularly during long commutes. An automated manual transmission reduces the need for constant manual gear changes.
The AMT is available with the petrol powertrain, while Toyota's claimed certified fuel-efficiency figure for the petrol AMT stands at 22.94km/l.
It is not designed to deliver the same smoothness as a conventional torque-converter automatic or CVT, but it gives buyers an automatic option without significantly increasing the complexity of the powertrain.
The Glanza also demonstrates how premium hatchbacks have become increasingly feature-rich.
Depending on the variant, Toyota offers features such as a 22.86cm touchscreen system, Head-Up Display, 360-degree camera, automatic climate control, cruise control, rear AC vents and connected-car technology.
The 360-degree camera can be especially useful in urban environments, where parking spaces are often narrow.
The Head-Up Display can also show key driving information without requiring the driver to look down at the instrument cluster.
Toyota announced six airbags as standard across all Glanza variants in July 2025.
The hatchback also offers safety equipment including Vehicle Stability Control, Hill Hold Assist, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child-seat mounts and Toyota's TECT body structure.
For family buyers, standard safety equipment can be an important consideration when choosing a compact hatchback.
Practicality is not only about cabin space and fuel economy. Ownership convenience also matters.
Toyota currently provides a 3-year/1,00,000km warranty, with an option to extend coverage up to five years/2,20,000km.
The company also highlights its Express Maintenance service, roadside assistance and connected ownership features as part of the Glanza ownership package.
These features can make the hatchback more convenient for buyers who want a straightforward daily-use vehicle.

The Glanza's appeal comes from doing several everyday jobs without becoming unnecessarily large.
It is compact enough for city driving, has a five-seat cabin, offers petrol and CNG powertrains, provides an automatic option and comes with features that can make daily use easier.
An SUV can make more sense for buyers who specifically want greater ground clearance, a taller driving position or a larger cabin. But those requirements do not apply to every car buyer.
For someone whose priorities are easy urban manoeuvrability, fuel efficiency, convenient features and manageable dimensions, a premium hatchback can remain a sensible format.
